I just read this: A North Carolina Non-Troversy. It appears the story is a bit of hyperbole. Apparently, this school is a fully subsidized program for low-income and "at-risk" families who have to apply to get in. Part of the program is providing lunches to the students or otherwise supplementing their packed lunches with other options as most of the childrens' families can't afford to pack a lunch or pack a full lunch, ergo the application to this special program. In that context I don't find it particularly absurd.

 

By and large, what this story boils down to is that a low-income child whose tuition is fully subsidized by the state under a program her mother opted into was offered some additional food to supplement the boxed lunch she brought from home. This option was provided not because of some overarching, generally applicable law or regulation, but because the program in which her mother and school voluntarily participate requires such an option be available.

All through grade school I brown-bagged it. I also took ten pennies to school every Monday for the week's milk (2 cents a carton).

 

Our high school had two cafeterias - one for standard plate lunches; the other for burgers, dogs, shakes, fries, etc. Outside of wrestling season (when I brown-bagged it), I hung out at the second caf.

Sure did! Lean meat sandwich and an apple or a banana. Not nearly as spartan as some of the hardcore wrestlers like to make out. Good times. Six feet tall and wrestled at 135 (bumped up to 137 in January and 138 in February).

Common Sense just never enters the picture these days. Shaking my head........

PS - I was fortunate enough to attend the NCAA championships twice when they were held at the University of Maryland's Cole Field House. Chris Taylor was gigantic.
