Region 6 and Region 7 had not met in the first round since 1990. That was the second of two straight years it happened and the winner of that game won it all both years.

The part that's the main challenge, is familiar foes. I argue you have a better chance to beat teams in a one and done contest, without prior knowledge of said opponent. Pairing 6 and 7 against each other, early, thins out the herd, so to say.

You may perceive they meet in the first or second round a bit, but they really don't. It may be drawn that way, but they rarely play. Louisville split into the 6th and 7th in 1966. Since then, they have met nine times in the tournament (this will be the tenth). This year will be only the third year since 1990 it happened with the other two coming in 2009 (quarters) and 2005 (quarters). Perhaps it is those three that give that perception, but they went a long time not meeting, even when on the same side of the bracket.

 

In those years, they drew on the same side of the bracket 16 times. Of the other 30 times they were on opposite sides, they met in the finals three times - 1973 (Shawnee over Male), 1974 (Male over Central), and 1977 (Ballard over Valley). They had sixteen near misses, where one team made the finals and the other didn't or both lost in the semis. Eight of those, both made the semifinals, coming within one game of meeting in the championship. One of those happened just last year.

I think Region 11 will be a definite favorite to make Saturday night. Marshall County is a very good team out of Region 1 and I like Holy Cross out of the 9th, but the 11th representative really should be frontrunner down there.

 

Don't forget about Holmes and Dixie out of the 9th. IMO both are better teams.

Has Dixie been struggling as of late? I'm noticing that Holmes and Holy Cross have been getting more love on the boards as of late and was wondering if those two had been playing better, Dixie Heights playing worse, or a combination of the two.

Dixie's schedule hasn't given them much exposure here in NKY.

 

IMO they are and should be the favorite to come out of the 9th. The next three weeks will tell us a lot about them, starting with Tues against Holmes.
