How much does Turbo Tax cost?

Do my own. Mine will go out April 17th with me owing just enough not to pay a penalty.

I can't do that. In 2010 more than 50% of my pay was variable. 2011 it was less but still a lot of variable.

If you itemize it will add a nice deduction. If you do not itemize it will not have any impact.
For most employee's who drive their own vehicle for work, you are right. There are, however, situations where mileage may be deducted without itemizing. As UKMF stated, it depends on the type of mileage and what type of venture you were in when you had the deductible mileage.

Thanks. I assumed it was for work like I do.

I understand and the majority of employee mileage has to go on Sch A, just not always.

I use HR Block online. I started out using Kiplinger's Tax Cut years ago but it was bought by HR Block. I used to take my returns to an accountant. By the time I completed the questionaire they wanted, I felt like it was just as much work as if I completed the return myself. Doing it online is great. They go through all the questions an accountant would ask. Sometimes it gets a little tricky learning a nuance or two in the software. My data from past years is saved and loads into the program so that is a nice time saver. I am sure Turbo Tax and other online or software programs are similar. I think the cost is around $50 for Federal and State returns. I don't do the premium where you get access to advice online as well. I also file electronically and have my refund direct deposit to my account. I don't try to mess with the refund. I just put in my standard number for dependants and leave it at that. Usually I get a decent refund.

I've used TaxAct for the last 5 or so years. Probably pay about $20 for the state and federal app plus another $7 to file the state refund electronically.

My wife and I take ours in to an accountant. When I was single it was no big deal and I would do it myself. It is worth it to me paying the additional $50-$75 to ensure I am doing everything correctly and be done with it a lot faster. I always felt like I was doing something wrong when I was filing myself. Now that we own a house and have a few more things to our name, we just take it and we are done with it.

$50 seems inexpensive for an accountant to do it.

What forms do you file? 1040 plus Schedule A and 740?

I've used Turbo Tax for several years now. I believe it costs about $65 and you get both state and federal.

^Our firm has a standard fee of $75 per return just for the admin (filing, copies, scanning, paper), so that's incredibly inexpensive!

I think you can get it even cheaper if you just print it off and don't file electronically.

Sorry, I should have clarified. My comment was in reference to Bugatti and Clyde's comments.

I am thinking it cost us $125 last year. I think. The $50-$75 was referencing in addition to what one would pay using TurboTax or whatever. It is worth me not having the anxiety of worrying about if I filled out something incorrectly and probably save me an hour or two.
