January 12, 201214 yr That's what the software costs. There are additional filing fees if you want to go the electronic/direct deposit route. If you file 1040 EZ you can do federal for free. State will cost you $37.Do you have to buy the software? I was thinking I did mine for free online and only had to pay the $37 to file state.
January 12, 201214 yr Author I used Taxslayer a few years back when I was single and it was cheap as dirt.
January 12, 201214 yr Homeowner, married, and I trade stocks from time to time. I could have your's done in about 20 minutes for a lot less than $300....

But if you have deductions it isn't free. The federal cost $29.95 (I believe) and not sure you can do that one online.

I'll have to get back to you after I do mine this year.
January 12, 201214 yr W-2 showed up today! Still waiting on some other docs to complete. I pay an accountant $200-$300 well worth it for my taxes.
January 12, 201214 yr I used to do mine in the past but when I got my house, got married, and starting investing in stocks it worried me a little I was doing things wrong. I'm pretty sure I am going to do it myself this year. My wife freaks about that stuff so I did it to make her happy more than anything. Homeowner, married, and I trade stocks from time to time. Out of curiosity, how many stock sales would you say you would have in a calendar year? (not dollar amount, I'm talking number of transactions) Also do you keep good records on your cost/basis per share on stocks you sold? That can affect your fee greatly if you are paying somebody to do your returns because it can be time consuming just reporting those transactions.

January 12, 201214 yr That's not too bad. I remember you talking about wanted to be a day trader and my first thought was you may have a few hundred trades to report. lol

I remember you talking about wanted to be a day trader and my first thought was you may have a few hundred trades to report. lol  I do in the future but I don't have the time to dedicate to that right now. I'm sure that would be a huge mess for an accountant to mess with if you aren't organized.
January 12, 201214 yr I use TurboTax and claim 0 all year for the refund. It's all I know. I'm too scared to play the game where I get my money every paycheck and owe 0.00 when I file. I tried to play a few times and got burned badly. Never again. I'll just claim 0 all year and use my refunds to help eliminate debt like I have been trying to do for so long.
