January 4, 201214 yr I figured all of the people on here would like hearing this. I know how much support people like to give Mike Brown around here. When ProFootballTalk.com speaks, people in pro football listen. So when site czar Mike Florio recently tapped Bengals president Mike Brown as the NFL’s Executive of the Year for 2011, it got noticed. Florio points to the Bengals drafting NFL Rookie of the Year candidates A.J. Green, the fourth pick overall, and Andy Dalton, a second-rounder, for two of the reasons as the Bengals moved on from the nucleus that brought them the AFC North titles in 2005 and 2009 with a No. 1 overall pick in Carson Palmer and second-rounder in Chad Ochocinco. Whitworth says the white hot criticism Brown draws has surprised him because of the recent drafts. “The last four drafts have had some prime-time players that are really helping this team be successful,” Whitworth said. “A team that’s full of Jermaine Gresham, Andy Dalton, A.J. Green, Carlos (Dunlap), Geno Atkins, Michael Johnson and you can just keep naming them. They’re the reason we’re having success.” Florio called Brown’s trade of the disgruntled Palmer “fleecing the Raiders for a first-round pick and a second-round pick in exchange for the rights to a quarterback who would never again play for the Bengals. ... Brown put himself in position to further lay the foundation for a bright future.” Brown is criticized for having a small personnel department that relies heavily on input from coaches. But one former NFL general manager noted the last two drafts that have netted a Pro Bowler, two first alternates, and a third. “He does it a different way and people laugh at him because it’s different,” the ex-GM said. “Just because it’s different doesn’t mean it’s wrong. They’ve obviously drafted a lot of talent. You’d have to say he’s had a great year. They got rid of the me-players, they drafted two guys that look to be a franchise quarterback and franchise receiver, and he got a No. 1 for Carson Palmer.” http://www.bengals.com/news/article-1/Browns-PFT-Exec-of-Year-honor-gets-noticed-/8fd9acd9-ffad-4634-9d5b-efa65eb6e45f
January 4, 201214 yr After twenty years of utter and hopeless futility he took the obvious best choice in the first round and had to be talked into taking Dalton over a guy with a "big arm", then pushed needles into a Jason Campbell voodoo doll and roofied the Raiders' front office so they would overpay for Palmer. Owner of the century!
January 4, 201214 yr They didn't mention the fact that he had to sell two tickets for the price of one to ensure a sellout for the team's final game of the season that determined a playoff spot? A game they lost and still backed into the playoffs.
January 4, 201214 yr Congrats to Mr. Brown. This award is well deserved. He has put the Bengals in position to win a Superbowl in the next several years. Watch out for the Bengals.
January 4, 201214 yr Only good I can see is that his father probably didn't turn over in his grave this year...
January 4, 201214 yr I'll classify this under the even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then. He made a nice trade and had a pretty good draft for once so I guess he deserves it. Call me bitter but I just can't get 20 years of the bad taste that Mike Brown has left out of my mouth to be happy for him. Will he still be exec. of the year when he makes a move to acquire Santonio Holmes this off season?
January 4, 201214 yr I know most people don't like him, but I agree with the article. Mr. Brown has certainly done some good things lately. Good drafts, getting rid of disgruntled/me-first players, spent over $200,000 to fill the stadium, and lowered season ticket prices. Most will say he has alterior motives, and they may be correct. However, all I know is the Bengals are in the playoffs and my season tickets are cheaper next year. Hopefully he will continue to make solid decisions like the last couple of years and not revert back to the 90s ways.

Owner of the century! People act like this past year was the first good draft. However the drafts the last few years have produced guys who have been real contributors to this team. Honestly if this team had any other name besides the Bengals, this team would be looking at more than just one pro bowler probably. So he actually has done well the last few drafts and not just this one. In no way does it make up for the past 20 years of him being the owner. However people need to get past that and realize that you know what he has started to do things a little better recently. Still plenty of room for improvement, however things have been slowly getting better.
January 5, 201214 yr When it comes to the draft, I'm gonna give kudos to Marvin and his staff. Sure Big Mike signs off on them, but when it comes to talent evaluation. I don't see that as Mike's strong point.

If the last 3 draft classes had suck, it would have been Mike Brown ruins drafts. You can't blame a guy for one thing, but then not give him credit for when things out do play out right.

Mike Brown doesn't give a rat's...what people think about him. Jerry Jones is the same way. Any other owner would have fired there GM & coach for the past five years record of each. These guys like the power, right or wrong. As for the Bengals things have gotten better because of the younger guys. Let them go 7-9 next year then 5-11 year after. Mike will still be "The Man" thats what people are tired of. His record since his father died is terrible.

Then the little changes he does make people still complain. So it doesn't matter if they are tired of him or not. So just by happy the few times he actually does do things right, because that is better than not at all. Luck or not when it comes to drafts, they have done better with it as of late.

He's more than likely shown the door. That's not going to happen with Mr. Brown. My hope would be that this year has been a humbling experience for Mr. Brown. He owns a winning team and still had the worst attendance in the league. The only one who can take the blame for that is him. The fans were not buying tickets because of him, no one else. Maybe after all these years he learned a little something. Just maybe...
