Did anyone else just catch that on WYMT news?

 

What are your thoughts on this?

WYMT obtained a copy of the resolution. It states:

"That the Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church does not condone interracial marriage. Parties of such marriages will not be received as members, nor will they be used in worship services and other church functions, with the exception being funerals.

All are welcome to our public worship services. This recommendation is not intended to judge the salvation of anyone, but is intended to promote greater unity among the church body and the community we serve."

I know right? I'm dumbfounded. I'm from Eastern Kentucky myself and I'm just puzzled. Things like this gives Christianity a really bad image, IMO.

To be honest it gives EKY people a bad name more than it does Christianity.

Don't follow? Because a church is located in EKY then it gives the community a bad name?

 

I haven't looked it up but I'm pretty sure this isn't the first church to ban certain types of people in favor of others.

 

 

This is about people pushing religion beyond the limits and has nothing to do with the church being located in EKY.

I'm not saying I buy into it but when people that are not from EKY hear this story their first thought is going to be based on the stereotype and not on the religion.

 

Remember, the KKK was "about religion" as well.

Also, While I don't completely agree with what the church is doing I don't really see the big deal with it. Churches are allowed to do that the same way that restuarants are allowed to serve who they want. While it's a slippery slope and will likely cause an uproar I think it's no different than other businesses doing similar things.

Absolutely they can do what they want. We can then ridicule their ignorance.

I don't recall reading anything in my Bible that says God frowns on interracial couples. I'm not sure what would be considered "wrong" about it.

This is why I am skeptical of all churches and why I fear being in EKY. This church makes churches look bad and it makes EKY look bad and that isn't fair to churches or people in EKY who don't practice ignorance.

It says in their goofy little resolution that the move is not intended to "judge the salvation of anyone" but is designed to promote "greater unity among the church." Forgetting the numerous levels on which that is absurd, it doesn't seem that move is a theological one, but a political or administrative one.

 

Does anyone know what year it is? I seem to have fallen through some sort of rift into 1955. We're still having discussions about miscegenation? Really?

Unbelievable ... churches like that give religion and Christianity a bad name.

 

I didn't think this stuff still happened in 2011.

Just sad. The church's absurd statement is that they welcome everyone to worship there, but they will not accept people in interracial relationships to be members or participate in the worship. I take that to mean they can't lead prayer, lead singing, serve communion, etc.

 

If these two folks were not in a relationship, would they each be welcome members individually?

 

I wonder if they accept contributions from them?

Two bad licks for Pikeville and Pike County this week.

 

This church actually isn't in Pikeville though but in a more remote and rural part of the county in Lower Johns Creek. Still though, it is sad this is even happening. I have grew up in Pike County born and raised (aside from the few years around Lexington/Richmond) and every church I have been a part of welcomes all members with open arms regardless of marital status, race, etc. The main theme in all of them I have been a part of was getting saved and being a member of the church family. None of these issues were ever in play. Hate to see that these issues are an issue in a church in the same county.
