October 31, 201114 yr Willie Cauley committed to UK overnight...7-0 center, 4-star, No. 39 overall on Rivals.com list.
October 31, 201114 yr Every time I watch some of his highlights, I think Eloy Vargas. :scared: Hopefully I'm wrong.
October 31, 201114 yr Plays receiver on his high school football team. Harold Carmichael is impressed.
October 31, 201114 yr Every time I watch some of his highlights, I think Eloy Vargas. :scared: Hopefully I'm wrong. Think Cauley may be way more athletic than Vargas. His offensive game is probably about as efficent as Vargas' was last year though and that is scary. The thing about this is, Kentucky needed that true 5 man prospect. Didn't get it in last years class, and with the 2012 class being the most stocked full of elite big prospects in some time Cal needed to get at least one of them. Struck out on Coleman, Tarczewski, McGary, Drummond (originally 2012), then never really was in the hunt for other big time elite bigs Steven Adams (Pitt), Isaiah Austin (Baylor), and Camron Ridley (Texas). All that was really left as far as Top 35 type big prospects was Cauley and Robert Carter. Carter hadn't yet been offered and although a good banger on the inside probably wouldn't have been the best fit for the DDM, so that put all the eggs in the Cauley basket quick. Calipari realized that and being the recruiting genius he is flys out to watch him play football friday night and gets the commitment by Monday morning, doing so all the while Cauley's relationship with in state K-State was heating up. This was the biggest position need the Cats had IMO so glad they got one on the board, Cauley is ranked 28th nationally according to Scout and is the 10th ranked center (sounds crazy to say that he is a top 30 kid but only 10th ranked center, lots and lots of elite bigs in this class and Cal about missed out on them all). I think by the time his career at Kentucky is over with Cauley is going to be a solid contributor. As a frosh he may see some time and could come in and be a help on the defensive end on the interior right away. Figurably, if the rule doesn't change and everyone leaves like is expected (Miller, Vargas, Jones, Lamb, Davis, Teague, MKG) that will only leave Wiltjer in the post. Wiltjer could be a heck of a 5 in the DDM, especially with a lot of athletic length around him, but he's going to be about all you have. At least now Cauley is in the fold to give some what of some depth down there where they are going to need it. He could get some clock next season and help out on the board and on the defensive side of things, but for real actual contribution I think it won't come until a couple years down the line. With that said, as long as he continues to improve and get better the potential is there for him to one day perhaps be an NBA player. He has the size, has the length, the athletic ability, good feel for the ball, runs the court well. Just needs to develop some sort of offensive skill set to go with the rest and I think he can do that in his time at UK.
October 31, 201114 yr Definitely not one of the first options for Cal in regards to big men, but you take what you can get. In previous years, this guy would be a centerpiece of a recruiting class. As UKMF stated, he'll likely be around for a little longer than most of Cal's guys, and I do think we need some of those guys.
October 31, 201114 yr In previous years, this guy would be a centerpiece of a recruiting class. That say's it all right there. Good possibility Cauley ends up being the lowest ranked player in the class, and right now he is still top 30! That is just so crazy to me still that Calipari can recruit like that. I can remeber back when I was praying for a Marshall Moses commit, or an Alter Majok! Heck, anybody top 50! Now it's like Cal can get a commit from a top 30 kid and UK fans are not really that satisfied. Which I guess it is a little depressing considering he is only a 4*.
October 31, 201114 yr I don't know much about him, but as long as he's better than our last 7 footers, I will be happy haha!
October 31, 201114 yr No resemblance to Eloy at all. He fits Cals system. How can you tell? By him dunking 30 times?
October 31, 201114 yr Author How can you tell? By him dunking 30 times? Can you picture Eloy playing wide receiver on the football field? Cauley is very different.
October 31, 201114 yr Can you picture Eloy playing wide receiver on the football field? Cauley is very different. Was thinking the same thing. He looks a lot more quicker than Eloy.
