January 25, 201214 yr Author Any Middle School updates from last night on the boys side? Highlands 7th grade lost and the 8th grade won at Twenhofel. The worst officiated game I have ever seen in my life. Less time should be spent on worrying about what schools have kids playing up and more on those schools where the officiating is so one-sided to the home team it is pathetic. These two were obviously not a part of the association and probably went about finishing up their janitorial work later that night. In the 8th grade game, there were 5 fouls called on Highlands in the first minute or two of the game and the fouls were 18-3 at one time in the 4th quarter before Twenhofel had to start fouling to get the Birds on the line. Now that is what you call a homer job if there ever was one. Actually hurt the home team late in the game because they could not put the Birds on the line because of the lack of fouls called. Highlands finally shot the bonus with 0.3 seconds on the clock.

In my opinion, the best refs are the ones that you barely notice. It's to the point now, that when you walk into the gym, you have to check out to see who the refs are to see how things are going to go. It shouldn't be that way. I understand missed calls, blown calls, etc.. However, noticably 'homer' calls is what needs to be 'called out'. Should we grade the refs at the various middle schools?

Absolutely we should grade these refs... the NKMSAA needs to have a set of officials that rotate. Should not be up to the schools to choose the refs for the games. Some schools use an assigner and some use the same guys each game and yes there are some homers out there. Most of these guys are trying to work their way up to the HS level and they need to be evaluated just as they do in HS so when they get there they are ready to go. Just logging hours is not getting the proper feedback for error correction.

Some of these guys are inexperienced and there is no better way to cut your teeth than at the middle school level. They are however members of the 9th region officials association. I know from my time in the area and on the AAU circuit that some schools are doing similar things as Highlands in getting their officials. It was very obvious from what I saw last night that the two at Twenhofel were not a part of the association unless they were from the 8th region and if so I feel sorry for that region.
January 25, 201214 yr Turkyfoot 8th grade beat Sharp(Pendleton County) 44-37 last night in overtime I believe. 7th grade Turkeyfoot beat Sharp as well by about 5 and the 6th grade game was also won by Turkeyfoot by double digits.

I can assure you that they are. I have seen them doing both JV and Varsity games at various locations. January 25, 201214 yr How was the tall ref? He had to be worth a few points.... Turkeyfoot was actually up 32-26 with under 2 minutes to go and Sharp took the lead with 20 seconds left 33-32. There was a questionable foul called that sent Turkeyfoot to the free throw line in the bonus were they made 1 and missed the second to send the game to OT. I thought there was some call's in that run that could have gone either way but in overtime Turkeyfoot shot 8 free throws to Sharps 3 to help seal the win.
January 25, 201214 yr How was the tall ref? He had to be worth a few points.... The refs were actuallly pretty decent for the 6th grade game.....shocking I know!!
January 25, 201214 yr Last night HHS 7th graders actually played rather well. If you put up 40+ you are going to win more than you lose. Twenhofel was deadly from the line and from 3 land. HHS ran out of gas and had two starters fouled out in the 4th.
