Is there any word on where the league is on bringing in another team to create a full 12-team league in a post-WVU/Pitt/Cuse conference? It would make sense that they're waiting to make sure the Boise situation works out before adding any additional teams. I'd like that 12th team to be Memphis, but I understand the reasons for not inviting them.

Memphis stands out to me for a couple reasons: 1) despite being historically not a great football program and being locked in a place where a lot of people are already fans of other programs, Memphis is a good market and I think football can be built there if the university is forced to get behind it and 2) we just lost Pitt, WVU and Syracuse; they've been replaced by UCF, Houston, and SMU. As big a hit that was for football, those are three big time basketball programs that have been lost. I'd like to see a solid basketball school come in as well.

Could be, they are not in a hurry because, in their mind, with the new 6, they have 14 teams in 2013 and could have another team start in 2014 to keep the conference on an even count for divisions.

Temple provides basketball the credibility and another top 20 TV market that Memphis can't.

 

Since you brought up markets, currently the BE is in 2 top 20 TV markets, Ruthgers (#1) and South Florida (#13). SMU brings exposure in Dallas/Ft. Worth (#5), Houston adds its market (#9), and UCF is in the Olando/Daytona market (#19). I know these markets must share with other state schools, but in 2007, USF proved it could not only compete with FSU and Florida in the local market ratings war, but beat them head to head when the school is in the national spotlight. (I still cringe over that lost opportunity, BTW. It was a great story at the time.)

Villanova is already in the conference and is trying to make the jump from FCS to FBS, by the request of the conference, but I think the league would prefer an established FBS school over Nova, mainly because the size of the school is so small, as is it's alumni base.

Wasn't it you who attributed UL's rise to riding on the "back of the best two players to come out of KY in 25 years" here and here? That doesn't sound like a "AQ bump" to me. But I guess that isn't valid here, or does Houston have a version of Brohm and Bush about to commit because of the "AQ Bump"?

Nova will do everything they can to keep Temple out. Not sure it will work, but they will try.

 

In a perfect world I think they would love to add BYU, but there are so many hangups with their situation I just don't know if it would ever happen. There is some push for Memphis St, but a good deal of the presidents are against it...

However, in my opinion it would depend on how much they want to spend on upgrading their football. From what I've read, they are having fiscal difficulty moving up, unable to expand their current stadium to FBS standards or get a lease to play at Lincoln, or get corporate commitment for season ticket requirements.

 

Temple would replace Pitt as a conference rival on the basketball side. Philly already supports multiple D1 basketball teams (besides Temple and Nova, there is St. Joe's), much like Cincinnati supports UC and X, only Philadelphia is a much larger metropolitan area.

But unlike Cincinnati, college hoops in Philly has to compete with the 76ers and the Flyers for entertainment dollars and viewership. As for Philly supporting St. Joe's... they play in a fieldhouse that only seats 4,000 people. Doesn't take a whole lot to fill that to capacity.

True, but the Pavilion at Nova only seats 6500. Temple's Liacouras Center seats over 10K. From what I understand, all draw to capacity now.

You are making some big leaps here---where did I compare the talent levels of Houston and Lousiville as similar? Since in another thread you attributed Louisville's jump to Bush and Brohm, it seemed fair to ask if that's what is happening in Houston as "right now Houston is about where UL was when they made the jump."
