The one spinning is you to back your slamming of the conference. Again, remind me where UC/UL/USF/UConn were 6 years ago when compared to the teams leaving for the ACC. The league was mocked, it was said UL was the only team even remotely worthy of being invited and that the conference was a joke. In the 6 years those schools have claimed 4 of the 6 BCS bids. Pitt 0, Syracuse 0 and WVU 2. Facts would say adding the BCS label to a program drastically changes everything, and someone that looks rough around the edges now can do major damage with the recruiting and financial boost involved. Dallas, Houston and Orlando are overflowing with talent, and now each of those schools will see the talent level take a big jump. That's plain and simple reality.

 

Would they have taken Boise had TCU stayed? Maybe, but they would not have needed them as they do now. It's a wash. Zero spin involved...

Could SMU, Central Florida, and Houston become big time football powers? Sure, they can. But you are going on the assumption that they will to back up your statement that nothing is really lost here. At worst, they seem like equals in football(that's not comparing Big East to Conf USA football) and WVU has done more than all of them combined. When did the service academies become big football powers? Those bigger markets and recruiting pools haven't done anything of note for the teams so far. The government has been quite ok with neither Air Force or Navy having AQ status for some time now.

I think potential can have a lot to do with it. Houston and SMU both won plenty of titles in the 70s and 80s in Southwest Conference, at least before the NCAA blew up SMU's program. I think they have that potential to be good again. Certainly Houston does and they have a really good football team right now. This new formation isn't great, but it isn't as bad as it's made out to be either.

USF went from no program to being a crazy coach away from being a big time program, and are now in position to take another leap with the lunatic out of the picture. I have seen the bump being AQ creates, and it is very, very real. Right now Houston is about where UL was when they made the jump. UCF is a sleeping giant and are showing a lot of commitment internally to make the leap. SMU is on the upswing and ranked as well. Sure paints the horrific picture you are painting, doesn't?

Agreed. If it looks as though this conference will remain an AQ, then I like Louisville where they are.

 

Is there any word on where the league is on bringing in another team to create a full 12-team league in a post-WVU/Pitt/Cuse conference? It would make sense that they're waiting to make sure the Boise situation works out before adding any additional teams. I'd like that 12th team to be Memphis, but I understand the reasons for not inviting them.

Wasn't it you who attributed UL's rise to riding on the "back of the best two players to come out of KY in 25 years" here and here? That doesn't sound like a "AQ bump" to me. But I guess that isn't valid here, or does Houston have a version of Brohm and Bush about to commit because of the "AQ Bump"?
