Oh boy. For a quick summary, I think Mormons are nuts. I didn't find the South Park satire to be very far from the truth having wrestled with and known a few Mormon families. It does seem to be VERY "cultish" to me. I've studied it quite a bit and it really blows my mind that anyone could possibly believe it.

I want to add two things to the above post.

 

1. For the record, I'm not voting for any Scientologist either. I bet many of the people who say Romney's Mormonism doesn't matter aren't voting for a Scientologist.

 

2. If Romney had a very clear plan on how to GREATLY reduce spending and would legalize "victimless crimes" his Mormonism wouldn't matter. That's why I added the caveat, "he hasn't given me any reason to overcome his Mormonism" to the original post. Nothing out of him is exciting me and just seems to be more of the usual.

I'm sure the Mormon deal is an issue with some, but I don't think it's as big a deal as some make it out to be. I really think it has more to do with things like Romney-care, his flip-flopping on abortion, etc.

 

The Mormon thing doesn't bother me, because I like John Huntsman, who also shares the Mormon faith.

I will openly admit, he hasn't given me any reason to overcome his Mormonism. It's a big factor for me.

 

I haven't watched a single debate and honestly don't think he is getting invited to debates, but out of what I've read the only "declared" candidate who even remotely excites me is Gary Johnson. Other than that I'd much rather stick with what I know then give any of the GOP lunatics a crack at it.

I saw the Santorum exchange as well as the one with Gov Perry. It just screamed "cat fight" or "teacher, please tell him to let me talk." Trying to talk over each other and saying "he's not letting me talk" just came off poorly for someone who has a legit chance to get President.

 

To be fair to Gov Romney I'd probably lose it occasionally, too, if I had to put up with Mr Santorum and Gov Perry much less trying to figure out exactly what Rep Bachmann was saying.

 

Glad to hear that overall he kept his cool.

 

I agree with you on the whole "he isn't letting me talk." issue. That may of been what made him look the weakest but then again, I think people will over look it and make Perry and Santorum more accountable for not letting a person speak.

Newt has so much baggage. Zero chance. Plus, he's wholly unlikeable as a person and his demeanor turns people off.

 

Newt is a cocky old fella but he does know his stuff. Especially when one listens to the rest of the candidates.

Trey Parker (creator of South Park) on atheism. "Yeah ... there's this big giant universe and it's expanding, it's all gonna collapse on itself and we're all just here just 'cause ... just 'cause'. That, to me, is the most ridiculous explanation ever."

 

I don't think his religion will be a huge factor. It didn't stop Harry Reid from getting elected to one of the most highest positions in politics.

 

I have said it before, Romney would of won the GOP nomination had Huckabee gone out earlier. In the primaries, the usual voters are the extremes of their parties. They are usually white, middle class voters that are between the ages of 50 to 80. I'm sure they are religious. Romney got that far in 2008, he will get farther this upcoming elections (hopefully). People always say that his religion will get in the way but there is no proof to it. Despite what polls say, what happened in the last election cycle rebuttals those polls.

Fair point on Harry Reid. I was just pointing out a Mormon who holds high positioning in the US. But that was seriously the smallest part of the whole post.

 

I will agree with you that some things the Mormons believe is just plain dumb. However, some things that I believe are just plain dumb. My point to the SP quote is that everyone has some sort of belief that looks dumb to others. That isn't going to make me not vote for them. It may influence my vote, but not be the sole reason.

To me, I am not sure how you can compare the two. One operates as a business/mob and the other operates as an actual church. One allows you to donate money while they other forces to pay a daily fee to be apart of it.

 

Would I mind having a president who believes that Jesus came to America and put gold plates for Smith to find or believes that Native Americans are 'red' because they denied Christ and was founded by a con artist or that they will be granted their own planet in the afterlife? Not really. That won't have an impact on me.

 

Would I mind having a president who is part of a church that was founded by a fictional writer that said "If you want to make money, create a religion.",who is part of a 'church' that forces them to pay money to be apart of it, works like a modern day mafia and keeps personal info on people so they can blackmail their members (testimonies by previous members) if any previous members dare speak out against Scientology? Absolutely. That has an impact on me because someone might be pulling the strings as to what our President does. (And I didn't even talk about the Alien stuff)
