October 20, 201114 yr Author What incumbent was running for POTUS in '08? None, but let's not act like McCain wasn't much, much, much more well known than Obama. People knew what McCain was, no one had a clue how Obama would be, but that didn't stop them for pulling the lever for him.

With the total 180 he pulled from '00 to '08 I would argue that McCain was in fact much more unkown than Obama. One of the biggest complaints about McCain was the he seemed like a much different person than he had been prior to 2000.

McCain had a long track record, and even if you want to only look at him from 2000-2008, he still had a much larger and more distinguished track-record than the unknown Senator from Illinois.

Obama actually laid out several things he intended on doing, one of which is ObamaCare. I feel I knew what I was getting with Obama and for the most part have gotten that. Though he has been surprisingly better in national security, terrorism, and military issues than I thought he would be. I would still however label him as an unknown going into '08. You have highlighted the great unknown with McCain. Were you going to get the '00-'08 version of McCain or the pre-'00 version?
