October 6, 201115 yr http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20111005/COLUMNISTS01/310050100/-1/rsslink Bozich gets his shorts in a knot because of Cal's comment slighting U of L... Cal’s answer: “It’s a unique thing. There’s no other state — none — as connected to their basketball program as this one. Because those other states have other programs. Michigan has Michigan State. California — UCLA has all those. ... North Carolina has Duke. It’s Kentucky, throughout this whole state, and that’s what makes this unique.”
October 6, 201115 yr Bozich acts like its bad to have someone in your profession that you look to for motivation? Someone that indirectly pushes you to be the best that you can be. It's like he's trying to write an article to dig at Calipari, when in reality, you could twist this around and write the exact same article in a different light. And let's be honest, there were probably a ton of folks from Louisville camping out for March Madness tickets as well. Did Michael Jordan envy Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and others? No. Did he look at their accomplishments and say I will have that and I want to be better than them? Yes. Not sure how the way Calipari views Pitino is any different.
October 6, 201115 yr This is the only part I care about: Make no mistake, Calipari has steamrolled Pitino several times, especially once in Rupp Arena and again in Louisville. Losing Teague to Calipari had to be as galling to Pitino as any recruiting hit he has taken. Calipari has the platform, resources and will to cut Pitino’s oxygen. Cal has the upper hand. There are some "ok" points made in the rest of the article but it mainly just sounds like little brother trying to puff out his chest, which is kind of cute really. He does at least acknowledge that Cal has the upper hand now...
October 6, 201115 yr If Cal is going to make the comment he made he has to be prepared for backlash. I would personally refrain from such statements. I'm not sure it helps the UK cause. Funny but not helping.
October 6, 201115 yr I'm not sure anyone envies Rick Pitino, particularly his last couple of years.I thought his "15 seconds of fame" was the envy of every red-blooded American.
October 6, 201115 yr I had a buddy who said and I quote, "Calipari's comments was a way of him trying to redirect froms from realizing he has been a underacheiver at UK." Really? He's been there two years with an Elite Eights and Final Four. 95% of the country, maybe even more, did not expect UK to make it past the Sweet 16, let alone the Final Four. Louisville fans...smh.
October 6, 201115 yr I had a buddy who said and I quote, "Calipari's comments was a way of him trying to redirect froms from realizing he has been a underacheiver at UK." Really? He's been there two years with an Elite Eights and Final Four after a season where the team missed the NCAA tourney. 95% of the country, maybe even more, did not expect UK to make it past the Sweet 16, let alone the Final Four. Louisville fans...smh. Fixed it.
October 6, 201115 yr Fixed it. Haha...very true. Thank you. Now he says, "I don't understand how UK fans can get behind a coach who says he cares more about getting players to the NBA than winning National Championships" How do they not see that they kinda go hand in hand. And at the end of the day, Calipari says that because that's what the majority of these kids wanna hear. He only says it for recruiting purposes. So simple to me. Call Calipari envious all you want...I say who cares where he finds his motivation if it makes him want to be better than his competition, then I'm happy!
October 6, 201115 yr I like it. Nothing wrong with a little dig at your rival, IMO. I love that the rivalry is already heating up in Oct. You can tell football just doesn't matter much in KY haha!
October 6, 201115 yr I think Cal gets upset because He gets little credit for his coaching abilities. He gets labeled as a great recruiter but not a great coach. Pitino has always been labeled as a master motivator that gets the most out of his kids and they over achieve much like this years team(even though they lost to MSU), Providence teams, and early UK teams. After this season, It's possible that Cal's first 3 UK teams could have over 10+ 1st round draft choices. So if they dont win the title Cal will continue to be labeled as a recruiter. I dont think its a fair but until he wins a title he will not get the credit he deserves.
October 6, 201115 yr "We're a little like the Green Bay Packers,'' coach Rick Pitino said, accepting the championship trophy and turning to the mob in blue. "The entire state of Kentucky owns our basketball team.'' - Rick Pitino in 1996, just after UK beat Syracuse for the National Championship. http://www.thefreelibrary.com/THE+CATS+MEOW+%3A+KENTUCKY+TOPS+STUBBORN+SYRACUSE.-a083933795

But Pitino's loan Championship was won with 7 future NBA players on the roster...there is a difference between over achieving and winning it all.
