August 23, 201115 yr I'm assuming if he truly appeared to have all that much potential, he: 1) would not have been third string at SF and, 2) would not have been released by SF. I don't think Mays cures their glaring weakness at that position, but maybe he'll be a Hall-of-Famer one day. They lacked speed badly and he gives them some of that but to bad it just gets him out of position quicker. Hopefully Zim can get him on the right track.
August 23, 201115 yr Was San Francisco loaded on defense last year? I remember them as middle of the road, but here the Bengals are accumulating their cast-offs. Mays is very fast, and very unfluid. He should be moved to weak side OLB since Rivers is out. Let him play in space and not have to cover a deep half.

Apparently, his coverage skills leave just a little to be desired. So bad apparently, that a lot of people feel he should put on some weight and move to LB. To me, just yet another disappointing pickup, given that there were A LOT of available quality safeties out there in the free agent market.

To me, just yet another disappointing pickup, given that there were A LOT of available quality safeties out there in the free agent market. What all quality safeties were out there? You talking about Bob Sanders who the Colts didn't bring back because he plays 4 games a year? Or Donte Whitner who they did think they had agreed to a deal with, but at last minute he changed his mind. With my guess being he didn't give the Bengals a chance to even counter offer back since it happened so last minute. So what quality safeties were out there for them to really get? Keep in mind those players would also have to WANT to come here. Which honestly it is not the most popular place for players to want to be at. They know it is poorly run, and they know about how their franchise QB was even wanting out. Yes no doubt Mike Brown is cheap, however you also have to take into account that top players just wouldn't want to come here anyways. The only guys they could get here are guys who are talented, but have been in trouble or just not lived up to expectations. You just have to be realistic about things, top players wouldn't want to be here anyways. It seems to me like you just wanted to see them spend money, even it it meant getting an average safety and overpaying him. Which once again what good does that do either. It is what it is. We can't change anything about how things are done. People may think they can by not showing up or whatever. However Mike Brown is to hard headed to change his ways, he would much rather take his team elsewhere than change his ways. Which don't give me you hope he does, because this city would never get another NFL team again. Which a lot of cities would kill to have an NFL team, even if they were not that good.
August 23, 201115 yr ^ Dude, you seriously need to take a breath. I've never seen anyone get so worked up about nothing. You're a Bengals fan - good for you. I was a fan longer than you've been alive, but simply have grown tired of the continued disappointments and cheapness through the past years. And yes, there were several quality safety FA's available this year - Mikell, Manning, Landry, Weddle, Harper, Sensabaugh, etc... Some re-signed with their own team, some moved on. Yep, the Bengals may likely have to overpay someone to get them to come to the mecca of football ineptitude. That's what happens when you've become the laughingstock of pro sports. Too bad. Brown is sitting on a bunch of extra cash. Spend it! Next year, he'll be forced to do so. Shame it took new league rules to make Brown spend money to try to improve his own team. No need to respond with some War and Peace-length post about all the wonderful things on the Bengals' horizon, or how every move the Bengals make is sheer genius, or how we should be thrilled simply because we have an NFL team here.

Nice post...You can only kicked in the _ _ _ _ so many times. People are just sick and tired of the Bengals garbage...

August 23, 201115 yr Would you rather have had them do nothing at all? At least they're not stupid enough to completely ignore their lack of quality safeties. Not that Mays is a quality safety but he's huge and he's fast. He has potential to turn into something. How can you even be optimistic with any move this organization makes? Once again a move done "on the cheap" by an inept organization that has no plans to improve this team anymore than they have to to field a team.
August 23, 201115 yr I wish he would move the team honestly. I personally hope that it gets so bad that he tries to do this. Maybe then the league will wake up and see what the "clown" that is Mike Brown is doing to football in this city. It can't be something that the commish enjoys seeing and hearing about probably on a daily basis.

Once that changes then something might happen.
August 23, 201115 yr I think Mays will never make it as a saftey, but maybe as a LB. The kid has major speed, but after that it falls apart. At LB you could hide his coverage skills some.

August 24, 201115 yr One guy's take on Taylor's weaknesses. http://blogs.sacbee.com/49ers/archives/2011/08/why-taylor-mays-is-no-longer-a-49er.html
August 24, 201115 yr As a casual USC fan, I was scared to death the Seahawks would draft Mays last year... I had no desire from him to be a Seahawk. I pretty much did backflips when they took Earl Thomas.
August 24, 201115 yr Mayes like Roy Williams can't play safety but he can bring the heat. Williams did it well for Zimm before. Mayes was overrated but if used right he can get a pass rush.
