Actually the games weren't blowouts for the most part in the first part of the 90s (including the disputed fake FG ending) but did become blowouts in the late 90s but then that was when Highlands was blowing everyone out.

 

So a game against a 1A school with a losing record for the first time in 25 years wasn't doing Highlands any good then, and they should and did take the opportunity to schedule some marquee games like Elder.

 

I don't totally buy LN's theory because it is pretty much set in stone from birth if someone is going to NCC in most cases.

 

There are a lot of kids whose fathers and grandfathers and uncles all went to NCC, there's no doubt about that. And I think thats neat. But I still think there is a lot of new blood each year at NCC. But there are quite a few kids at Highlands whose parents went to NCC and I know one of the reasons was, up to a couple of years ago, NCC's difficulties on the football field including the blowouts the last couple of times they played. I don't think Bob will want to risk the football capital he's built up by getting blownout by Highlands and I bet Bob thinks that given the opportunity, Dale would run it up (and Bob's probably right in his thinking and I'd do the same thing if I was Dale). We are fighting for the hearts and minds of the athletes in Ft. Thomas. If beating NCC by 50 might influence a kid or his parents to choose Highlands, I not only understand Dale doing it, I want him to do it.

First, how many people will come from Pikeville to Newport?? Second, this game wouldn't have to be played next year (even though I wish it could) They could play HHS instead of Ryle in the future. Bob made a comment in the Enquire how the future looks bright.

Second, yes they (NCC) could have played Highlands instead Ryle this year. That would mean Highlands could not have played Colerain live on TV at Paul Brown Stadium since it was the same week as the NCC/Ryle game. Which do you think Highlands would rather do? Which do you think they would rather do in the future?

I agree that not playing Highlands, as bad as I wanted to see it, was probably beneficial to NewCath's program in the last few years. There is new blood. However, this isn't the same Thoroughbreds who ran a 5-3 defense against Lorenzon, or had to run a full house backfield to keep that offense off of the field. This isn't the same Highlands team with 3 All-Americans and 6 All-staters on the field like back in '98 and '99. They are much more competitive right now. Highlands would not beat NewCath by 50. The coaching has improved ten fold since then. Dave Schneider and Keith Faust has a very good grasp on the offense. Coach Wagner consistently has NewCath's run defense among the best in the area. Would Highlands win??? Probably, but it wouldn't be 10 out of 10. There is more balance. I think that NewCath will not lose as many players as they did in the past. They play an exciting offense, have had success, and for many people, the Catholic school aspect is very important. Either way, I think that it is good for both programs. The rivalry down in Danville hasn't seemed to hurt either program.

Next year is not a possibility. Our schedule is set with a repeat of last years schedule, with the exception of us playing Elder instead of Colerain (at an undecided location as of now, but most likely the Pit because Elder will want the home game and Dale likes playing in hostile environments to get his teams ready for the road playoff games; although that would mean only three home games: Southwestern, Madison Central and CovCath). The Preps Classic at PBS will be the fourth week this year and we'll be playing Louisville St. X there instead of at Highlands. Should be another great schedule although if X and DeSales had won their championship games, it would have looked even better on paper. And while Elder was down this year, from what I hear they are supposed to be better next year. As good as they were a couple of years ago? Not from what I've been told by my Elder friends, but definitely better than last year.

The CovCath loss was pretty bruising; could you imagine what it would have been like on here if it was Highlands that had done it? Nah, I think Bob's a smart old bird and if he can find good competition outside Ft. T to improve his team, he'll not be calling Dale for a game in the near future.

As much as I would like for this game to happen, I can't see it happening. Highlands would win this match-up 9 out of 10 if not 10 out of 10. The difference between the two programs over the years is that Highlands knows how to win the big game. During my time at NC we beat Highlands twice but had no State Championships...Highlands had two State Championships during this time frame.

I have a lot of respect for the coaching staff at NC, three of my coaches are still there and two guys that I played football with are coaching now. I want to congratulate everyone on the State Championship and hopefully this is the start of many more to come!!!

While I think that this year's game would have been very interesting, I tend to agree with other posters that year in and year out, NCC could not compete with HHS.

Why would Dale want to say or do anything different? It seems to be working!!!!! It looks like Bob maybe took a few pointers from Dale on his scheduling of tougher opponents. Just thought he would like to have another tough game to get them ready for the playoffs!

Thats not my point, someone said Dale sends an invitation to ncc every year, which im sure is just Dale talking it up. Telling kids and parents what they want to hear.
