July 25, 201115 yr NO WAY to Fukudome. 3 HR, 13 RBI, 2 SB in 285 AB's. What good does that do you? Add in the salary and he is no great shakes defensively, if I recall. End of discussion. Markakis is interesting although I don't know why Baltimore would want to trade him. But his OBP is about the same as Stubbs' so I would rather have Stubbs lead off with his speed and put Markakis down in the lineup where his more consistent bat could drive in runs. Fukudome's defense is actually very good in RF ... it was in CF where he wasn't up to par. He would give the Reds a good leadoff option against righties for the rest of the season, one you wouldn't have to pull for defense in the late innings. Markakis is simply having a down year. I don't see any way the Orioles would trade him at this point, given his age and ability.

Given Hamilton's poor batting average he is far from a given as far as being a big-time player. Mesoraco is a nice player but he projects as a .280 15 HR 80 RBI guy in the majors according to most experts. If those 2 are the centerpieces to a deal for a potential #1 or #2 starter that would be under the club's control for multiple years at a reasonable salary they should give it some serious thought.

Especially if the organization is as high on Cozart as the fans are. As for Mesoraco, I think you're looking at a future solid player, not necessarily a franchise cornerstone. You have to decide whether improving the rotation for the next few years is worth a little bit of a stepdown offensively at the catcher position. If Ubaldo were just a rental I'd say no way but you'd have him around for awhile pretty cheaply. It reminds me of the deal the Red Sox made a few years back where they gave up Hanley Ramirez and Anibal Sanchez for Mike Lowell and Josh Beckett--that turned out pretty well even though the Sox gave up a couple of very good players. The addition of Jiminez would allow the Reds to keep Chapman in the pen if it turns out he's better suited for that role and give the Reds a very tough back end of the bullpen to pair with what could be a very good rotation.

July 26, 201115 yr I think he should have kept Leake in. He is a ground ball pitcher, and a double play could have got them out of the inning without giving up a run. Instead they take him out and now a simple fly ball ties the game. I would have taken my chances with Leake still in at that point.

He was already at 103 pitches, his season high is 114--no way he was finishing the inning. Why leave him in there to potentially get the loss when the pen was rested? Especially in that heat. They could have went Chapman, Massett, Cordero 7,8,9 or played matchup in the 7th and then their 8th and 9th inning guys.

He's holding his own at 20 in Low-A ball, I guess, but that's the extent of his accomplishments so far. Mesoraco is one of the best catching prospects in baseball, and no one disputes that. But Jimenez is a proven top-of-the-rotation pitcher that is eminently affordable for the next few years. Guys like that don't come cheaply.
