Michael Miller has been running the Summer scrimmages and workouts. He has been a major part of the Varsity program for the last three years in terms of running practices, watching film (hours and hours), and holding other coaching levels within Beechwood's basketball program. He has been a big factor in the programs recent success.

That it what I have been hearing in the community
Anyone hear anything else about this lately?

I read in today's NKY.com that Zimmerman said that they are "at least a week and a half away" from hiring a coach. No formal interviews have been conducted but he has talked to a couple of candidates on the phone.

What is the deciding factor on who gets this position?

The main factor is finding a coach who can fill an open teaching position in the school. I think they are determined to have the coach be in the building. This does not always mean that the best coach will get the job, but the best fit for the school does.

I hate to see them get a bad coach, who are the top candidates?

They made that mistake back in the mid 80s too! You can get a good coach for the team and also get another person for the teacher position.

How many basketball head coaches in N. Ky. aren't teachers? I don't know the answer. I am curious. I don't know of any.

I think there are some coaches who are not certified teachers. Some schools hire in coaches in non-certified positions such as study hall supervisors, alternative/discipline supervisors etc. That way they are at least in the building. I think that is few and far between nowadays but it use to be the case quite often.

I don't think it's a matter of hiring a coach that is a teacher as much as it is hiring a coach that is a teacher for an open teaching position. Can't hire a math teacher to coach if there are no math openings.

For the right coach they could move teachers around or find a position.

Again, I wish they would find the right coach/person for the job! They need someone who will stay at the school for more than a couple of years, look at Bellevue, how many coaches have they had over the past 5-7 years? It's not good for the program and it's not good for the kids! In the mid 90s they made a mistake with a hire who happened to be a teacher, but im not sure if paraprofessionals were allowed then. Then in the early 90s another mistake with a hire, some say another was about 6 years ago. Make the right choice for the program and the kids!

Miller has been around Beechwood since he was a kid, he won't leave for "greener pastures" like others as soon as they get a chance, and on top of it he knows his stuff!

Mike Code and Mike Flynn come to mind as coaches who are teachers, but not in the building where they coach. Both have had some success. Certainly, it'd be nice to have a coach in the building to ensure discipline and academic problems are dealt with swiftly and correctly, but the best candidate may be a non-teacher in this case. I agree with SportsGuy's assessment of Miller as a dedicated Beechwood alum and a good coach of the fundamentals of basketball. I'm sure Mr. Zimmerman will make a good decision in the end.
