In my opinion there is no way anybody scores 31pts on Highlands this year. Except for maybe Trinity in a scrimmage and Elder at the Pit....

 

I don't see Elder putting up 30 or more against them even at the Pit; if they did, I would be very surprised.

I doubt any of those games in the 80s, 90s and 00s have much at all to do with this upcoming game.. I'd bet Boyle Co's record in openers over the last 15-20 yrs is pretty impressive in itself. The 2 teams are basically even on paper, so, I went with the home team, simple as that.

Yea, but why didn't you say Highlands has won 20 State Championships and has a run of three in a row going? I mean, what is Highlands record in week two for the same time frame? Or week 5? Or week 10? I would say it's about the same.

Their run currently stands at 4 in a row, driving for 5 this season.

No offense to HBF, but since Highlands has gone to the two platoon system or primarily the two platoon system, in my opinion Highlands hasn't started the season as strong as they used to. There are a lot of new starters in the two platoon system in most years and it takes several games for the new starters to get the bugs worked out. I expect the Boyle game to be a close one. It's at Boyle and I flat out guarantee you that Boyle has had their sights set solely on the Birds since the game was agreed to. French and Co. would like nothing more than to welcome the Birds to 4A with a loss that would be heard state wide.

However, I think you also have to look at the quality of this year's new starters - on both teams. Highlands' sophs last year were very strong, and the frosh team was brutal. Nothing against the classes in front of them, but I think the new starters from these two classes will make the adjustment to varsity more quickly than we've seen recently. As for Boyle, I'll guess we'll have to wait and see how their new starters work out. If last year's frosh game is any indication, the advantage - at least with respect to new starters - has to go to Highlands.

Kind of. The O-Line and D-Line are on the platoon system. We have a few guys that play one way at skill positions also. We probably have 3-5 guys that play both ways. 2 RB's, 1 WR and maybe one or two others.

 

Jarrod Harrington, Devon Cox and Zach Hester come to mind. When I think about it they may be the only ones that go both ways.

Sounds like the likelihood that I'll be able to watch him on future Saturdays is good also - and how awesome is that for a fan! However, (you knew there was a however coming) I've seen a lot of good two way players neutralized by Highlands and their two-platoon system over the past few years, and if not neutralized, at least relatively contained the first three quarters before they finally ran out of gas in the fourth. This will be a big test for Zach & the other 2-way players right out of the box.

I can see that for Devon Cox at RB/LB. Hester may not go both ways right off the bat and could likely be strictly at LB to start the season. I have no worries at all about Harrington at WR/DB.

Last year's frosh game should not be used as an indicator for this year's varsity game. No one from that game will start varsity and 1-3 guys from that game may see the field with varsity on special teams. This Boyle team is junior and senior dominated.

That is what I would expect from a program like Boyle, as well as Highlands. I would be interested in hearing what sophomores will start varsity for Highlands this year. As good as that freshman team was, I still would be surprised if more than one or two starts varsity at Highlands as a sophomore. The Bluebirds have too much quality depth for that to happen.
