Not for me. My issue is with a politician who believes that black kids were better off being born as slaves than being born today. Single parent home or not there can't be a belief more ignorant than that. She'd earn a lot more respect from me and maybe even a vote if she makes it a platform to tackle and find a better way to solve this dilemma but by believing a kid born as a slave is better off than one of my kids is insulting, ignorant and beyond belief that someone in a public office is that out of touch with reality.

 

Honestly, it'd be nice to see Obama tackle this issue as he can speak about it first hand. It's gone on way too long and there are many many factors surrounding it and the chain needs to be broken. Sadly. it's going to be a while before it will be broken.

I am happy that this thread, which at one point looked like it was devolving into a typical "your guy did it too, even if it was 150 or 80 or 50 years ago" thread, into something better.

Democrats have been great at getting the black vote. A lot of it could stem from the Civil Rights Act and the perception that it was Democrats who made it. Add in affirmative action, the belief amongst a large segment of the black community that Reagan's War on Drugs was designed to put blacks in jail, Bush and Hurricane Katrina and talking heads that appear to oppose all things black like Hannity and Limbaugh and there you have it. Blacks voting for Democrats.

Actually a vast majority of blacks switched from the Republican to the Democratic Party because of what happened or didn't happen because of the Great Flood of 1927. Herbert Hoover didn't do as he a promised. I think he was Commerce Secretary.

Does the pledge she signed actually say black kids were better off born into slavery than they are today? Perhaps it did but I didn't see that in there. Actually the first quote from the pledge (and since its the first quote I assume it's of the greatest signficance to the author of the article) reads:

 

Slavery had a disastrous impact on African-American families, yet sadly a child born into slavery in 1860 was more likely to be raised by his mother and father in a two-parent household than was an African-American baby born after the election of the USA's first African-American President.

 

I thought the point was being made that there are way too many African American kids being raised in single parent families and the pledge crudely and inartfully was trying to make the point that there were more two parent families during the worst of times for African Americans.

It is an historical reference attempting to compare the number of single parents today vs during slavery times attempting to make a point that you've agreed to yourself: there are way too many single parent African American families today and that such can cause problems for the children.

Guess it's just perspective then. I read the headline, then the article and I thought the article effectively proved that there is not only no way to know if there were more two parent homes during slavery because the studies don't begin until 1880 and that those studies were not reliable.

I still think if McCain doesn't choose Palin he likely wins. Palin as a running mate was a gift to the Democratic Party. If a solid opponent doesn't appear then Obama will win again. I don't care who the VP candidates were (although I sincerely hope Obama survives his term because the thought of President Biden is terrifying). I'm older then you are by several years and it is my considered opinion that Obama is the worst man to occupy the White House in my lifetime. I think that the American people made a HUGE mistake electing an inexperienced man that was all glitter and no substance.
