June 14, 201115 yr Would Bobby Knight have said the same thing if it had been "Kentucky basketball players" instead of "Ohio State football players"? It would have probably been the greatest rule instead of an "idiotic" rule. Whether you agree with his stance or not, it's at least a consistent one. It's the same rule that got Steve Alford busted that Feinstein documented in "Season On The Brink."
June 14, 201115 yr I'm sorry but I disagree with your assessment of Hall. He was dry as dirt when coaching but he had some very successful teams with talent and without. Any coach who has the #1 team in the nation, trails by 7 at halftime in the first round of the NCAA, and chooses to bench three starters for three scrubs named Casey, Williams and Cowan has more guts than most any coach I've ever known or seen in my lifetime. :thumb: (And remember that this was when 7 points was a big lead because there was no shot clock) Hatz-The Big blue fans I am around seem to place these former UK coaches in high esteem-Rupp, Pitino (although that is fading with his move to U of L, and off court trouble), and Calipari (which will go way up if/when he wins a championship, and then imo way back down should it be stripped away). Hall and Smith are coaches that won a championship, but seem to be dismissed for style of play. There are small legions of folks that defend these two, but not like the others. Then there is Sutton whose time at UK seems to be erased by many. To the thread title. I do think the NCAA is out of touch and should be revamped. When the power schools seem to skirt the rules constantly, then either the rules need to be changed or the punishments or both, but this current system is flawed to the enth degree.
June 14, 201115 yr If the blind squirrel couldn't find a nut every now and then he wouldn't be so fat.
June 14, 201115 yr Whether you agree with his stance or not, it's at least a consistent one. It's the same rule that got Steve Alford busted that Feinstein documented in "Season On The Brink." Jim, I thought what Alford did was pose for a fraternity calendar in his IU uniform and the proceeds were going to charity. By using his status he was declared ineligible and made to sit out a game. Knight chose the UK game to pose his team's rep vs. KY's. I didn't think Alford did it for his own personal gain.
June 14, 201115 yr I like listening to Knight comments/knowledge on the actual game of basketball, x's and o's. That is where it ends, he is a pompass jerk that thnks that he is the NCAA. Knowledge of the game, yes - anything else,no. I agree, if he's talking about basketball, I like listening to him. I don't pay attention to anything else he talks about.
June 14, 201115 yr I actually agree with Knight that the NCAA is out of touch. What I disagree with, and where Knight has been idiotically inconsistent, is in his assessment of John Calipari & Jim Tressel. You can't publicly say that there's something wrong with college basketball because a coach who put two schools on probation is still coaching, and at one of the elite programs. Knight was speaking of Cal & UK, of course. And though he was technically inaccurate in the "probation" part, we all understand what he means. But when Jim Tressel now puts a second school on probation (first Youngstown State & now Ohio State), Knight comes running to his defense. Regardless of his basketball accomplishments, I believe the man to be a buffoon of epic proportions.

Still falls under the same principle of someone profiting — in this case, a sorority; in OSU's case, individual players — off the likeness of an amateur athlete.
June 14, 201115 yr I think many of our lawmakers are out of touch as well, but I still abide by the laws they put forth. Bottomline.......these rules were in place when they were violated. Whether anyone agrees or disagrees with them is irrelevant. We all know Knight's comments are always bias depending on the violator. Knight=Buffoon. I don't have one ounce of respect for the man.
June 18, 201115 yr I disagree. If they let players sell championship rings, bowl jerseys and other stuff aquired from playing for a winning program, then a program like OSU gains a huge recruiting advantage. The spin would simply be, "hey, play here, we will the Big Ten at least 3 years that you are here. Think how much you can make selling all of those rings and Rose Bowl jerseys. You won't have that luxury at Michigan." I have to disagree. Once the items are given to them, IMO it becomes their personal posession. You and I can sell our personal pesessions any time we want and I think they should be able to sell them also. The services for autgraphs is different, but their personal posessions are their personal posessions. I with you RE. The rules are what they are, and I disagree with them, and until they are changed they need to be enforced. But the enforcement needs to be consistent for all.
