Adam Wing DeCommits from the Herd

Featured Replies

Rowan County qb is not only de-committing from the Herd he's decommitting from football. He has accepted an offer from Travis Ford to play basketball at OK State.

Big state tourney got him some exposure.

Who remembers Troy McKinley?

Obviously the kid was in a unique position. How many kids can choose between two sports? He must like bb better than fb. Troy's story is a good one. The kid got hot for a long weekend and earned a full ride to UK. One of the greatest shooting performances I have ever witnessed.

Congrats to Adam again.

Congrats to Adam again. He is a great example of the opportunities for kids if they choose not to specialize in one sport. Before opening this thread I was thinking he was getting offers from bigger football schools. I was at the Sweet 16 and the kid put on a show. Good luck to him and I wish him well. Glad to see Travis Ford come get a Ky boy for OK State.

State tourney can open alot of doors for some kids. Wish nothing but the best for this young man.

Here is the story from J. Demling:

Rowan County’s Adam Wing commits to Oklahoma State

Posted on May 31, 2011 by Jody Demling

Adam-Wing0311-218x300.jpgRowan County High School two-sport star Adam Wing has pulled a switch.

Wing, who was a star at the Sweet 16 in March, has backed off his commitment to Marshall University in football and has now committed to Oklahoma State in basketball.

The 6-foot-4, 195-pound Wing averaged 13.9 points and 8.3 rebounds a game for Rowan County and helped the Vikings to the Sweet 16 title game.

"It’s kind of like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Wing told The Courier-Journal. "Basketball is always what I wanted to do but I never really got the exposure until the state tournament when I had a few good games and people started saying, ‘Who is that kid.’

"It feels great for me and I am really happy."

Wing made a name for himself on the hardwood in the Sweet 16. He hit seven of eight three-pointers and had 31 points in the title game, a loss to Christian County in overtime. After going 5-for-5 from three-point range in the semifinals against Bullitt East, Wing hit his first six threes against Christian County.

In four Sweet 16 games, Wing made 14 of 21 from behind the arc.

Am I the only one thinking that he may not play football this year if he committed to play college basketball? That would change a lot.

No you are not, just talking to my son about it. First we thought he may not play basketball due to the committment to Marshall. Guess we will just have to wait and see.

I can't imagine him not playing football this year.

I didn't either, but I thought he had a lot more opportunities in football then basketball, now things have changed.

Huge, huge mistake for Wing, thought both he and Hickey should have went the football route. Big state tournaments very rarely transfer into big time D-1 stardom, Hickey will never last at LSU and like-wise for Wing. They'll both be back in the state playing basketball(Morehead State,Pikeville,WKU?) within 2 years, someone mark this reply down

It is hard for me to criticize a kid doing what he loves. Wing did seem to have alot more football offers, but my hat is off to him if he's doing what he really wants to do in pursuing basketball. How do you know he has to have "stardom" to be happy?

I though Hickey played football for one year. Did he become that big of a college football recruit in that short amount of time? He didn't scream out D-1 football caliber to me when I saw him play football.

I haven't seen Wing play football but I saw him at the state tourney. I am not going to act like I am a great college basketball expert and predict who will do what and end up where but I know if my kid played himself into a scholarship offer from a Big 12 school for basketball and had mid level D-1 football offers I am guiding him to the Big 12 in basketball unless he is striving for the NFL. If the NFL was the case then the basketball scholarship wouldn't be a thought. To me, unless you are going to the NFL, I'd choose college basketball over college football 100% of the time.

I could care less where either two end up in two years. This year I am happy for both to have the opportunity to go outside of this state and play basketball and receive a free education at a D-1 school. None of us know how their future will turn out. They both have tremendous opportunities based on what coaches saw at the Sweet 16. More power to them and good luck to both in the future.

This is great news, I wish the young man the best.
