This is why Social Security need to be overhauled

Actually, after this guy won, he did call, and nothing was done about it.

I didn't get that from the story I read. Maybe I misread it though. I was under the impression that he planned on continuing to receive the food stamps because of a loophole that does not take into account acquired assets. Apparently, food stamp eligibility is determined based on consistent monthly income only and because he will only be getting a small amount of money each month from the interest of the lottery winnings, he still qualifies for food stamps.

It's easy to say that, but if you were essentially given free food or money and you had made the proper attempts to stop receiving it and they gave it to you anyways, I'd imagine most would have a hard time not using them.

Not in this case. You just won $2 mil and continue to receive food stamps. Unless your a piece of trash you aren't going to continue to use the food stamps.

I'm just saying I don't think you'd find too many that would just let them go to waste.

Would you? I would take them to the SS office and give them back.

I'd like to think I wouldn't use them, but it's easy to say that when you aren't in that situation.

I wouldn't use them now, much less if I had $2 mil. If I really needed them and qualified to receive the aid I would definitely use them. But I can't take the stance of advocating personal responsibility and then do something like this.

If I were him, and I just won 2mil lottery, I would hope I would have the cahoonies and moral fiber to stop the assistance checks. And if they continued to come, save them and give them back to the U.S. taxpayers. As a matter of fact I know I would.

The entire social aid system needs modernization, not the least of which is technology. And, yes, policy changes and closing loopholes such as this.

How about the 6% I pay goes into MY OWN retirement account so I don't have to fund these fools like this when none of this money will be around when I am old enough to use it. What a scam.

As pathetic is disgusting as this is, it just shows how screwed up our welfare/social security system really are. I really don't know how any one can be surprised by this garbage any more.

Should a widow whose husband was tragically killed in a horrible accident receive SS for herself and her two 6 month old twins til age 18, even though she received 2MM in life insurance and 8MM in a judgment?? Should a retiree who has a nest egg of 4MM saved receive SS? Should SS only be distributed on an "as need" basis?

No and No but if and until it is changed it is what it is .

Which is why I'm all for privatization.

Amen. If I'm going to lose 6% of my paycheck, I'd prefer to do it by my own accord rather than wasting it on these people.
