May 4, 201115 yr This is fairly interesting to me. I have several left leaning friends who were, and still are very critical of W's choice to stay and finish reading the children's book to the class of second-graders he was with in Florida the moment he was informed about the September 11th attacks. I have always defended his actions. What could've been accomplished in those 5 or 10 minutes by that one man? Regardless, here are several of the reactions of the students in that room, in their own voices. http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,2069327,00.html

May 4, 201115 yr I don't know how anyone can be critical of Bush's leadership in the few days after the attack.

May 4, 201115 yr I don't know how anyone can be critical of Bush's leadership in the few days after the attack. Nor can I. At the moment he was told, I'm not sure there was an appropriate response. Had he stayed for another two hours, I could see a legitimate reason to criticize. But he stayed something like 7 minutes.
May 4, 201115 yr ...watch Fahrenheit 911 and it'll tell you how they can be. Michael Moore epitomizes everything I detest about our political discourse. I think the government should be questioned and challenged as frequently as possible, but it should be cogent and reasonable, not some silly attempt to smear the other side at any cost. If there were valid points in that film it was lost through the deceptive editing and exaggeration. I'm with Zoot and Randy on this.

Bush's leadership in the days following 9/11 - at all. I only brought up that ridiculous "documentary" to demonstrate that there are people who see otherwise.

May 4, 201115 yr I don't see how him handling it differently would have made things any better. I also think he did nothing wrong in staying a few more minutes with the children.
May 5, 201115 yr In Decision Points he says he knew was being watched and filmed after Card told him about the 2nd plane. Logistically SS probably had to ensure they had route back to Air Force cleared before he could leave anyway. "Secret Service wanted to get me to Air Force, and fast." A stationary motorcade on an unsecured route would have not been good that day. While enroute he made the first decision of the situation. Shoot down unresponsive planes. "Hijacked planes were weapons of war." So in minutes a decision was made that if necessary to save thousands on the ground to kill hundreds of Americans in the air. And it only took Obama 16 hours to decide to take out the mastermind of that day - after sleeping on it.

Of course, there are exceptions to every rule.

Obama decided between the easy route (drop a bomb on the place), or the difficult choice (send in commandos). Bin Laden had been there for 5 years, so the issue wasn't nearly as time-sensitive as Bush's decision.
