My thinking is if they are going to get about half of their picks right or even a little less than that they are better off having more picks than just one. If Green misses they are hurt badly. If they get the 27th pick and 4 additional picks it gives them a chance to get lucky more than once including two first rounders next year. They have a lot more holes than just WR.

As always. I think the results on the field over the last decade speaks for itself when it comes to the Bengals.

Carson has zero leverage on MB. He can sit out and not get paid and MB won't care at all.

He can come back after they bring in another starter either through the draft or in free agency.

Your right if Green ends up not being as good as advertised then it was a bad move. However this is a franchise that people always talk about how they don't have the scouts to find the right players in the draft. So now we are trusting them to find the right players and want more picks, when we have a guy in Green that everyone seems to agree will be a stud in the NFL. Not to mention getting Green keeps with the plan they probably had going into the draft. Got a top WR which secures that position for many years, allows them the chance to move Chad. Still have a chance to get one of the same 2 QB's that would have been there at 27. (They wouldn't have been able to move up IMO in front of 12th to get one of the other QB's). So if they get that QB now in the 2nd round, they are set on offense at the skill position for many years. Now the rest of the draft can focus on line depth on both sides, and just best players available. Not to mention they still have a chance to trade for more picks possibly if they trade Chad, or who knows maybe they will trade Carson. So they did the right thing this time IMO, and they still have the chance to trade for more picks.

That is why getting Dalton would not give Palmer any leverage. If anything it takes away any leverage from Palmer, now the Bengals could try to call his possible bluff. If he would come back then great, and the young QB could learn for a year or two. If he is serious and does retire, then oh well we drafted the guy for the future.

No way they can start Palmer the first month if he comes back the Saturday before the season starts. He won't even know 1 play in the offense. If they draft Dalton I'd still guess they try to get a veteran backup or starter like Hasselbeck or Bulger. Palmer comes back the day before the season, out of shape, with no clue of the playbook and then what do they do?

I don't trust their scouts because they have so few but even teams with the best scouts miss everywhere in the draft. If you pick 4 times in the first 60 picks with two additional forst rounders the next year you can afford a miss. If you pick 4th and 35th and miss on Green, Dalton/Mallett or both you're done for 5 years.
