No, I think you're going way overboard wtihout knowing more about the situation or her history. Do you even know that she has a leadership position in the Tea Party? I haven't seen that anywhere. As I understand it she forwarded an email. I could have done the same thing because I think it's a funny picture and my first thought was not of the racial overtones. Now, if she created the email that's another thing completely because she would have had time to think about it. If she had a history of other iincidents I would also say remove her, if she's in a leadership position. If we remove leaders for single incidents where they show a lack of judgement we would be scrounging for leaders even more so than we currently are.

 

I can buy most of that except for one thing. It is so clearly obvious that this picture is offensive that it makes me question her judgment. I don't want someone in leadership who makes such an obvious error. Add in the fact that it is in the public eye now and there is no choice but to remove her from any leadership position.

I don't know how many of you know but I am a 36 year old black male. For an elected official to send this email depicting Obama as a baby chimpanzee is so racist she may as well have just called him every derogatory racial epithet there is to call the man. If not for the fact that was explained earlier, the one where blacks have been historically and wrongly depicted as monkeys because of the color of their skin, their big lips and lack of intelligence, then maybe it would just be as wrong to depict Bush as a monkey but he is white so it doesn't sting nearly as much as it does when it is Obama. This woman knew better also. All white and black people over the age of 30 know the racial connotations of labeling a black person a monkey/gorilla/baboon. And if they don't I pray they learn before they end up in a sticky situation. One of the most insulting racial epithets has the word monkey in it so yes, it is extremely insulting to black people to be depicted as a monkey. Had it been a donkey, zebra, horse, giraffe it wouldn't be a big deal at all but for it to be a chimp/monkey/gorilla/baboon......she knew better. Her apology is as fake as Bobby Knight's apology, IMO.

She is an elected official, so by default she is in a position of leadership. While she may not be named as an official within the Tea Party, it seems likely she is at least looked to for leadership.

So when the person calls themselves something, it's okay? So if George Bush would've called Kanye after his comments the N word, that would've been okay right? Since Kanye has referred to himself as the N word before.

Nope, but it was an offensive comment towards her and women in general. Either way it was an offensive insensitive remark from someone in a leadership position. Consistency people, that's all I ask for.

It’s long been acceptable to mock and deride politicians, or any public figures. Not only is it legal, but we generally accept it as a society, even when it is juvenile. It comes with the territory of being a public figure. Though, we do make judgments about those who delight in this juvenility. However, racial, sexist, or other forms of discrimination directed at a public figure do not reflect the perpetuator’s views of the specific public figure in question, but their views of all who make up that race or gender. To make a racist remark toward Obama, for instance, isn’t simply mocking Obama, but making a statement about black people as a whole and thus reflects the person making the comment’s racial prejudices. It is false equivalence to suggest that anything insulting directed at a public figure is the same as something racially tinged being directed at a public figure.
