Not really. I'm sure we've all known very intelligent people who make careless mistakes. And vice versa.

Regardless of the racial debate, the handling of this email by the Tea Party leader shows such a lack of judgment that she can not continue in a leadership position. If the Tea Party allows her to be in a leadership role, they create big questions about their judgment and/or intentions as a group.

It's mainly been used to both say that black people look like monkeys and, relatedly, to say black people have more in common with primates than (white) humans, and are thus inferior, stupid, primitive, etc. It doesn't have any racial connotations with white people. It doesn't mean the person who sent this out intended it as such, but if they didn't, as Getslow said, they would have to be seriously dense on racial matters to not realize the implication.

 

I know some extremist groups would bring religion into it and say that white people were created in the image of God, while black people were descendants of apes. So, it would have that background as well in my mind.

If the Tea Party keeps her in some sort of official position, it certainly opens them up to questions.

 

No more so than a boatload of other politicians and organizations. It seems like a lack of judgement seems to be required to get elected these days.

Regardless of how many times somebody on "my side" or "your side" did something similar, it was ignorant.
