That is what people were saying last year... then the Blue Grass produced the 3rd and 4th finishers in the Derby, the Preakness runner-up and the 3rd place finisher in the Belmont Stakes.
April 17, 201115 yr How wild would it be for The Factor to go from the favorite to possibly not having sufficient GI earnings to make the Derby field? Coolmore and Derby Trial yet to go, which could vault some fringe longshots past him (he's 18th), the way this trail's gone.

Derby Trial got kicked back up to graded stakes status last year, so it gives folks a last-ditch spot one week before the Derby to get enough earnings. I have a feeling that the way this year's preps have gone, the Derby Trial and Coolmore will be a lot more talent-packed than normal.

I find it hard to believe a horse is going to run in the Derby Trial and then in the Derby the next week.

After some research the most recent I could find was 2005 with Don't Get Mad. He won the Derby Trial and went on to finish 4th in the Derby. From 2006-2008 the race was not a grade stakes race. There are two graded races this Saturday (Coolmore & Jerome) and the Derby Trail the last one on April 30th.
