There were a few srs who hadn't played hs ball before - or at least since maybe frosh year, as well as (I believe) 1 sr who had played all previous years.

For those not jumping in from the 9th Region thread, a point of clarification. None of these Seniors were told they could not try out for baseball because they hadn't played recently OR to open up slots for development of younger players and "future" success. The Seniors were told the same thing that all other players trying out were told -- "If you play baseball, you need to be in town during Spring Break."

WOW catching after pitching a game? Hope the kid has a strong and rubber arm, as other than a pitcher, a catcher throws the second most of any player between the lines!

Is this that uncommon in high school baseball? Isn't the Cottingham boy a catcher that pitches? There must be others.

It isn't as common as you would think.Cottingham has not pitched a lot at all. I believe this will be the first year he will be pitching for Beechwood and his summer team. Dylan has a strong arm and should be a very good pitcher. He has a rocket from behind the plate.

Most schools don't have the luxury of having the multitude of players as others do. Now, I'm sure the Coaches know and do what's best for the kids that have to play multiple positions. I trust them!

Don't doubt what your saying but indeed for a young man to pitch and throw lets say 80/85 pitches in a game, then to catch the next game indeed puts a strain on a kids arm! Many Coaches use first base or even right field to put a pitcher in to rest his arm!

Does anyone believe that Coach B doesn't have the a boy's health as a priority?

Why wouldn't the senior trip take place after the school year. That is how most other schools do it. Then everyone could go out for the team. I don't believe there is any team in N KY that has kids go on spring break and miss baseball.

Agreed. I also have found it to be very, very odd that coaches will bring a kid in lets say the 3rd inning to throw, take him out in the 4th and then bring him back in the 7th. You wanna talk about arm trauma. Not good. Same thing goes with the whole consecutive day pitching. I dont care if a kid throw 2 pitches or 42 pitches on day one and is allowed to come back and throw the next day as long as he is under innings pitched in a two day period, Damaging imo.

Personally I think the innings pitched rule is a joke. I have seen kids throw 50/60 pitches in one inning and I have seen a kid throw 60 pitches over 4 innings and the kid who pitched 4 innings sits for a couple of days, while the kid who threw one inning, pitches the next game and you are correct about a kid throw an inning then going to Right only to be brought back to pitch in the seventh. Very good way to hurt the kid!

I remember back in the day when Highlands had Glazer and Pfetzer as their star pitchers. I believe Coach B even played with these HS greats. I just remember watching Glazer's warmup routine and he was basically done until his next start whether he threw one pitch or 80 pitches. Didnt matter, he threw so hard during his warming up that his arm now needed the rest. I vividly remember his routine was only interrupted once and that was during a back to back pitching performance Region Championship win and then 1st game of Sectional. Sectional game didnt go so well, sore arm cited as problem.

Coach B is a breath of fresh air for Highlands Baseball. He is committed to the program and is building a solid base all the way down to the Coach Pitch level. I believe the silliness of missing practice and games due to spring break will wane with each passing year. I know this has been a problem as long as I can remember, but I look at Coach B as being different from the way things were done in the past. I look for Highlands to have a very nice year this season. They will be fundamentally sound and not an easy win for anyone. Those of you from the outside looking in who don't get the spring break thing, I will tell you it is just as important for the parents to put on a show as it is for the kids.

Are you serious? Now you sound like Mike Brown we have a 20 yr plan to win. That is just a stupid comment to make. You are going to cut a kid who can help you win now.

That's presumptuous to say the least. So a kid who hasn't played since 6th grade or 9th grade is suddenly going to step in and help the Birds win? Has the kid been honing his skills all of these years?

He sure seems to have brought a "buzz" to the program and seems like a guy who can get them back into the thick of things. Does anyone know a potential starting lineup?

I think the "cabin fever" is getting to the boys. Nothing is worse then practicing baseball in a gym. With the amount of rain we have had it will be a miracle if anyone gets on a field until 1st or 2nd week of April if this weather keeps up.

Highlands use to practice up at the old Army gym on the "strongside" of town back in the day. Now they are limited to a 30' x 80' small gym. I would suspect the Football fieldturf has its advantages.
