What part of union busting doesn't the right understand? The union has indicated a willingness to negotiate. The governor doesn't want to negotiate. He wants to bust the union and is using the benefits issue as his excuse. I am not a member of a union. but I am smart enough to know that most of what most of us understand as a good job, whether union or not, exists as a direct result of union negotiated agreements. No, HELL NO.

So would you sacrifice your job for your union?? If the union gets their way thousands will be fired, laid off and furloughed..

Except they'll strike if demands aren't met, which is costly. We also have seen the violence when they do strike, so sometimes, I guess you could say they had a "gun held to their head", figuratively speaking.

I'd say it's more on GM management ... the union is certainly negotiating to benefit its members, as it should. If GM thought those were deals they could live with and miscalculated ... well, that's on them.

Each parent should pay $19.50 a day for these teachers to baby-sit their children.

What about those special education teachers and the ones with Master’s degrees? Well, we could pay them minimum wage ($7.75), and just to be fair, round it off to $8.00 an hour. That would be $8 X 6 1/2 hours X 30 children X 180 days = $280,800 per year. Wait a minute — there’s something wrong here! There sure is! The average teacher’s salary (nation wide) is $50,000. $50,000/180 days = $277.77/per day/30 students=$9.25/6.5 hours = $1.42 per hour per student–a very inexpensive baby-sitter and they even EDUCATE your kids!) WHAT A DEAL!!!!"

I'm sure you can read it that way, but it doesn't seem that simply renegotiating the workers' benefits is his only goal here.

On a MUCH lighter side of this topic----I have 3 nephews in college at UW in Madison. Here is how one of them feels about the protests......

 

"Alright protesters I've put up with you for this long, but this is just too far. All though your monotone rendition of "we're not gonna take it" puts Twisted Sister to shame, your protest just hit me on a personal level. Your little protest is blocking me from getting to Qdoba. I guarantee you that my getting to Qdoba will be much more successful than you going to the capitol."

It's not the governor's decision to want to restructure benefits that bothers me as much as it appears to be a thinly-veiled attempt at union busting.

 

If it was just about the former and not the latter ... well, I wonder if the uproar from the teachers' union would be as strong.
