The All - A is not what it used to be IMO. To many bigger schools are allowed to play in it. I think it should only be what it was originally designed to do. I stop attending because of the changes they have made. Might as well get rid of it now.

 

I know your pain, because I think the same thing about the state football playoffs. Hard to watch some of these football teams who happen to be better than 35 or so other teams get crowned "state champs."

According to who's criteria? Still seems like a small school tournament to me.

 

Just because the "all A" doesn't choose to use the moronic classifications football has established, doesn't mean it's the tournament that needs to be restructured.

Then simply don't classify it as an "All A" tournment bc that is not what it is now. I don't consider 2A and 3A schools in one sport coming down in classification to play smaller schools an "All A" tournament. I still believe that at first it came to be in NKY it was meant to be for small "Class A" schools since the KHSAA does not sanction any tournament as a "State Championship" except the "Sweet Sixteen".

I think the All "A" Classic is still a great tournament, but I think allowing larger schools to participate has hurt it some.

It seems we discuss this every year. The All "A" started in 1990 using the same numbers the KHSAA used for Class A football (425 students in grades 10-12). The KHSAA adjusted the football numbers every couple of years, but the All A numbers stayed the same, allowing more schools to qualify. The decision to take the smallest 125 schools made it a little less complicated.

 

So would you propose a 32 team All "A" State Tourney to follow the KHSAA's football guidelines? :confused:

 

Agree the move to "125 smallest" is simpler than the previous criteria, and have no problem with the numbers. Winning a state championship should be difficult, and prevailing vs. 124 other teams, given the regional/statewide format, certainly meets that requirement!!

My question to all on here who seem to be mostly complaining about the tournament's designation of All "A", why must everyone follow football's designations? Common sense would dictate that crowning 6 champions out of 220 participants is pretty watered down, but that's a topic for another thread in our politically correct, give everybody a trophy world.

 

Maybe it would be wiser to view the All "A" committee's participants as similar to track where there is more of a small, medium, and large designation? The "smallest 125" still comprises only about 40% of the hoops' schools in KY, and while not as difficult as winning the Sweet Sixteen, still is much tougher to accomplish than a football championship vs. 30-some other schools?

On that list for the 16th region there is West Carter, Morgan Co and Bath Co. that are not class A schools in football. Also, I believe that Russell played in it and won the 16th last season, they were 3A in football at that time.

And don't forget that Russell plays up a class in football. They are actually 2A according to enrollment.

:thumb:I thought so, I was in hospitals and PT rehab centers most of last year. I had heard that Russell was going back down to 2A in football this seson,I knew they had playd up to 3A for a few years. Actually, Russell started 3A when the playoffs/classification system started around 1974 or so and moved down to 2A from that, can't remember the year but hey were originally in 3A.

The biggest problem of this thread is too many people are seizing upon the name of the event and trying to fit it into some other pre-defined box in their head. There's a reason they put the first letter of the alphabet in the quotation marks -- so folks don't go around thinking "A" = 1A.

No--It's the smallest 125 now, and formerly 425 or less in grades 10-12 (co-ed)====213 or so boys. CCH equates to about 1000 enrollment co-ed--Sorry!!

I don't think the smallest 125 is the answer. If they want a true All A tournament then limit the enrollment to 400 grades 9-12. The tournament may have less than 100 participants but that okay.

It's just an opinion of mine, but schools with over 400 enrollment in grades 9-12 are not "small" or "A" schools.
