The All - A is not what it used to be IMO. To many bigger schools are allowed to play in it. I think it should only be what it was originally designed to do. I stop attending because of the changes they have made. Might as well get rid of it now.

Not sure how the tourney has changed much since it went "statewide", from the early years of being a regional event? The enrollment criteria had remained constant at 425 students (co-ed) or less in grades 10-12 since they expanded to include the entire state; and the numbers of participating schools has been in the 115-130 range for years if I'm not mistaken? They adopted the "smallest 125 schools" rule a couple years ago to simplify the situation, but as some small schools consolidated, the participants may have changed a little? If you think about 425 in grades 10-12, that equates to 560-580 range for 9-12, which is where the larger schools are currently? Why would it be good to "get rid of it"??

Boy's--Heath, West Carter and Edmonson County are 3-A in football

Girl's--West Carter, Monroe County and Sheldon Clark are 3-A football

 

All this means to me is there are too many classes in football??

How can a school be Class A in one sport and AA in another?

 

It is simple. Different sports have different classes. Why does a 6A football school compete in 3A track and field? 6A is the highest class in football and 3A is the highest in track.

 

The All A tourney is a great event. Can you argue that some schools are too big to participate? Maybe. But, all classes in all sports have arbitrary lines drawn.

 

Take it for what it is worth. A great basketball tournament for the smaller schools in KY.

Just rename it if it's that big a deal.

Funny that with all the arguing that there are too many "bigger schools" in this event; the team that has had the most success in this tournament (University Heights) is among the smallest in the state??

When the change was made, the tournament was down to 90-something schools, as I recall.

Heath was in 2A the last four years in football, and only next year moved up to 3A. Of course, the decision to limit Class A to 32 schools had something to do with that ... Heath's enrollment seems to have been pretty consistent in that span.

 

The same applies to Monroe County, as well.

Could they just rearrange regions if they decide to go 9-12 in the enrollment count?

On that list for the 16th region there is West Carter, Morgan Co and Bath Co. that are not class A schools in football. Also, I believe that Russell played in it and won the 16th last season, they were 3A in football at that time.

I think the All "A" Classic is still a great tournament, but I think allowing larger schools to participate has hurt it some.

It seems we discuss this every year. The All "A" started in 1990 using the same numbers the KHSAA used for Class A football (425 students in grades 10-12). The KHSAA adjusted the football numbers every couple of years, but the All A numbers stayed the same, allowing more schools to qualify. The decision to take the smallest 125 schools made it a little less complicated.

I can't answer for other regions but as for the 16th I get confused on this and really think that this "All A" stuff is getting ridiculous. No, I don't consider the tournament to be an All A anymore. I have noticed teams that play in a higher classification in football sometimes play down to an 'A" regonal. I fully admit that I don't understand all the qualifications for a class A basketball school but just don't see how a school can play in 2A, at times 3A in football and in that same school year play in a "Class A"tournament in basketball. I would say that this tournament is not sanctioned (or at least it wasn't in past years) so maybe that is the reason :idunno:.

I am not slamming any one school for playing down, obviously that was allowed or they couldn't do it. I am sayinng that to me what started out as a tournament for small schools in NKY and grew to other small "class A" schools around the state is no longer an "All A" tournament. I kow that I certainly don't put much to it anymore, just merely a series of tournaments to give some teams some good competetion as they advance in this what I now consider to be a statewide invitational tournament to give teams a chance to play some good competition as they advance and maybe help prepare some for what imo really is THE state tournaments.....districts, regionals, KY. State "Sweet Sixteen" Tournament.

 

So, in answer to the orriginal question is ............. No, the "All A" is not an "All A" tournament.

 

If you are one of the 125 smallest schools in the state, you are allowed to play. No playing down involved. I'm not sure why that's so confusing.

 

Just because the state wants to bail football teams out by limiting classes to 40 or less per division, doesn't mean basketball should.

According to who's criteria? Still seems like a small school tournament to me.

 

Just because the "all A" doesn't choose to use the moronic classifications football has established, doesn't mean it's the tournament that needs to be restructured.
