If I am not mistaken, this tournament was initially started and intended for the smallest of schools, hence the All A title. I understand that the tourney is still for the bottom 125 schools (per enrollment) but the tourney has grown and expanded from it's original intention. Now, I'm not saying that's a bad thing, just stating a fact. I do, however, think that there is no need for this tourney if it is going to continue to grow and expand. Kentucky High School Basketball is so unique due to the no classification for a State Championship. To me, this makes the title seem more legit. If the All A continues to expand, there will be no need to continue both tournaments. Just sayin'...........

No one has answered a question I asked in an earlier post. Is CovCath eligible to play in the "All" A with their 2009 total of 496 enrollment in 9-12?

 

EZ, since Cov Cath is all boys you have to double their enrollment number. No they are too big.

As for the tournament, I think it is a great format. Stan Steidel and company have done a great job since the birth of their idea in the Early 80's. They should have the final say on who is in it!

It is not sanctioned by the KHSAA so the champ is still a "fictional" All A champ. But try to tell someone that has earned a ring or played in the tourney!

I think the term "All A" was taken from class 1A football. I understand a line has to be drawn but if 1 school has less than 100 boys and another has more than 300 it seems to defeat the purpose. I think take the smallest 64, divide them into 16 4 team regions and lets play.

The biggest problem of this thread is too many people are seizing upon the name of the event and trying to fit it into some other pre-defined box in their head. There's a reason they put the first letter of the alphabet in the quotation marks -- so folks don't go around thinking "A" = 1A.

 

They did start that way though in 1990, using the KHSAA Class A numbers.

A lot of people seem to have forgotten that or don't want to acknowledge it.
