What is wrong with Covington Catholic?

Featured Replies

Hang on. The OP has a point. They should just shut the place down. Maybe bulldoze the whole place.

Naaaaa. Maybe the OP should just get a big ol' grip.

SealTeam is spot on.

How sad is it that some coaches can't get jobs at their former schools, have to come to a down school like covcath, then get fired from there?

WAIT! Someone got fired?

In the '90's CCH won State Championships in football and Regional Titles regularly, at least it seemed, in baseball and basketball.

What has changed at CCH?

For what it's worth, Cov Cath's basketball team only won region once in the 90's (1992).

To answer the thread question ... what is wrong with CCH?

Some unrealistic fans is the only thing I see.

Fortunately we've got them all so that other schools do not have to have them.

And Wildcat isn't a fan.

Well, I'm going to bed and I will be sleeping better knowing that so many are so concerned about our well being. It's so hard to be the hunted all the time.

I thought someone might offer some perspective on if the economy has hurt the talent pool that was there not that long ago.

I can offer what some real stats that I believe will answer your question. The school's current enrollment is 487, which is considerably down from the expectations when the built the new school. The new school can hold 600 students. I do believe that the cost to attend CCH ($6,500/year - tuition only) is a factor, but not the reason why some sports are not as consistent as the fan base would want them to be. There is a growing concern that if the enrollment continues to drop (487 is lowest) that the school is going to face some major financial hurdles in the future. I believe the pool of talent is still at the school.

Aren't Holmes & NCC two of the top teams in the 9th? You'd like to win them all, but not many 9th region teams can run the table. I don't think any realistic expectations had CCH going undefeated in the 9th, either.

I have wondered if the newly founded sports (such as lacrosse) have drawn people away from football and/or basketball. As sealteam noted, the enrollment has not increased, yet the number of sports has gone up. I'm not familiar with all of the kids in the school, but I'd imagine that there are students who are playing other sports that could contribute in the "traditional" sports (i.e. football, basketball, baseball). This isn't an excuse, just something I've wondered since CCH has added a few new athletic programs.

Finally, the most important thing to me (particularly with the basketball program) is the amount of work that these kids are putting in during the summer/off-season as a TEAM. I'm sure some of them play AAU, and some of them work on their game individually, but from what I understand the attendance numbers at open gyms and other off-season workouts have been relatively low over the past few years. I don't know why - if it's a lack of interest, other sports, or some other reason - but to me that is crucial.

CCH is a premier athletic school. They are the smallest all boys catholic school in the state of KY. They may not win state championships every year, but if you look at each of there varisty sports they are in position to compete with the states best programs. I know that football and basketball are king but you can't dismiss the cross country and track teams competing for a state championship nearly every year. Swimming and golf are two of the states best programs and have graduated students that each year receive scholarships to DI programs. I know this may be off track but nothing is wrong with CovCath as a whole. The football program will be very competitive again with Wirth as the head coach. They may not beat HHS every year but as they showed this year the games will be far more competitive. The basketball program does need some development, but is certainly considered, year after year, as a quality team that can win the region. They have been overshadowed by Holmes the past couple of years when they were clearly the 2nd best team in the region behind one of the best teams in the state.

^ I think I like this guy.

This thread was obviously only started to get a reaction from the CCH faithful.

Wildcat isn't a CCH guy & seems to have a bone or two to pick with the Colonels. That's fine. It just seemed like the appropriate place for me to chime in with my $.02, which I've been curious about for a few years now. :D

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how many Colonels are in the lacrosse program?

I do not know the exact numbers, but each year the number appears to get a little higher. I do not think it impacts any of the Football or Basketball guys, but does the Track and Baseball guys as it is a spring sport.

As far as this years basketball team goes, obviously no on thought much of them in preseason as it has been stated they were ranked 6th, so in that case they have over achieved to a degree. And with the tough schedule they have played, a 12-4 record is very good. Yes they have not always looked their best and have appeared to go into a little swoon, but I do not think it is anything to be worried about. They still should be considered as having as good of a shot at winning the region as anyone. Good luck boys the rest of the way.

Ouch, enough with the personal attacks. You're gonna hurt my feelings.
