What is wrong with Covington Catholic?

Featured Replies

I had heard great things about CCH basketball this year, about their size and talent, but then they lose 2 straight to Holmes and NCC and it doesn't look like they will be able to win the region again this year.

Football has struggled for 4 years as well.

Baseball has been the best, but has still not been able to win the Regional Title recently.

In the '90's CCH won State Championships in football and Regional Titles regularly, at least it seemed, in baseball and basketball.

What has changed at CCH?

I think some are reaching for the panic button a little too early.

Holmes and Newcath are no slouches (both top 25 teams) and the Colonels have already beaten a top 10-15 team in Henry Clay.

Covcath will be fine.

Do you confidently believe they'll win the region then??? Is that what "fine" means?

They are in the mix with about 5 other teams. I wouldn't say any of them would be a lock. That as about as confident as you can get.

I do not think that anyone can confidently pick who will win the 9th Region and I am sure Walter has a rooting interest in Holmes (not that I speak for Walter or anything).

I'm not confident in saying any team will win the region this year.

That's what makes the 9th region so exciting though. There are 4 or 5 good teams that can get on a hot streak and win 3 games in a row to get to Rupp. I'd consider Covcath one of those teams which means they are a region favorite.

Nothing matters until you get to the postseason. See Newport v Holmes in last years' region championship.

WOW, I guess you were the only one that heard great things about CovCath because they were picked preseason #6.

I think my friend Walter sumed it up pretty well. There are at least 5 teams that could win the 9th this season and other than Holmes, none have won the Ninth since CovCath won it is 2006.

And Wildcat you are picking whom to win it all?

CCH is a premier athletic school. They are the smallest all boys catholic school in the state of KY. They may not win state championships every year, but if you look at each of there varisty sports they are in position to compete with the states best programs. I know that football and basketball are king but you can't dismiss the cross country and track teams competing for a state championship nearly every year. Swimming and golf are two of the states best programs and have graduated students that each year receive scholarships to DI programs. I know this may be off track but nothing is wrong with CovCath as a whole. The football program will be very competitive again with Wirth as the head coach. They may not beat HHS every year but as they showed this year the games will be far more competitive. The basketball program does need some development, but is certainly considered, year after year, as a quality team that can win the region. They have been overshadowed by Holmes the past couple of years when they were clearly the 2nd best team in the region behind one of the best teams in the state.

No, I was hearing it from someone who saw them in person; I was just shocked to see them lose 2 in a row; I don't know enough to pick anyone.

Sorry, I know they are very good in soccer, golf, swimming, etc., but I was looking at what most consider the 3 major sports.

I thought someone might offer some perspective on if the economy has hurt the talent pool that was there not that long ago.

How sad is it that some coaches can't get jobs at their former schools, have to come to a down school like covcath, then get fired from there?

If you want to overlook the other 6 sports they compete in where they are the premier program in most of them fine.

If you want to look at the 3 "major" sports:

Basketball- 9th Region Champs 06', 9th Region Runner-Up 07', 9th Region Runner-Up 08', one bad year in 09', lost in Reg Semi's to Regional Champ Newport 2010, and 2011 one of the teams that easily could win it.

Sorry, they are the 2nd best program in NKY behind Holmes over the last 5 years.

Football- since the 2006 title, no one disagrees they aren't consistently what they used to be year after year. But they made major strides this year and probably were the 3rd best team in 5A by the end of the year. They are heading back to where they should be consistently.

Baseball- 21 wins in 06', 9th Region Runner-Up in 07' with 27 wins, 9th Region Runner-Up in 08' win 27 wins, 9th Region Runner-Up in 09' with 33 wins, 25 wins in 10'.

They were runner-up 3 straight years. So you are basing your statements off these championship games? Anything can happen in a 1 game format. They are still the predominant program in NKY.
