Very true and the media and talking heads really seem to have no clue how to handle it. I don't recall all the finger pointing when Reagan was shot unless I've just forgotten about it.

What I find sad about this thread (specifically those clamoring for the rhetoric to be toned down) is that in my analysis of this forum over the years, we have many, many posters on here from both sides of the aisle that jump at the opportunity to start a thread critizing some politician from the other side of the aisle. This site is a microcosm of what we see in the US today. Some give lip service to the need to tune out the extreme portions of the political parties and concentrate on the middle, yet I see some of those same posters starting thread after thread, or making post after post, engaging in the same rhetoric. It's sickening. I'm a conservative on many issues. Some of those issues cause me to disagree with Pres. Obama. Yet I feel no need to tear the man down every time he does something wrong or I disagree with. Yeah I know: you paid your $20 and you are entitled to express your opinions. Howver, with that right comes responsibility.

 

These days it seems to be the Rs on here that love to start threads and make posts jabbing and criticizing Pres. Obama every chance they get. When Bush was the Pres., it was the Ds on here. Who cares that someone mispronounces the word "strategy"? That is totally irrelevant to the job Pres. Bush was doing. Yet some posters took some perverse delight out of it and branding Bush as stupid. Give me a break.

 

And it's not limited to just sitting Presidents either. Look at the threads and posts involving Palin, her daughter, Bunning, Pelosi, Reid, Grayson, etc. Most sicken me.

 

Time for people in this country and in this forum to grow up. I used to enjoy this forum and engage in it regularly. Now I rarely do, as it disgusts me. Yeah, some of the childish posts and threads will die down for a while; in a month it will probably be right back in the sewer. And if I offended any one by this post, this time I'm not apologizing for it. The truth sometimes hurts. If your offended, go look in the mirror.

I found the bill proposed by Congressmen King to be almost ironically frustrating.

 

His bill says would make it illegal to have a gun within 1000 feet of a Congressmen.

 

Does he actually think that a person like this madman who is willing to KILL a Congressmen would stop and say, well I best not take this gun because it is illegal to have a gun within 1000 feet of a Congressman.

 

All that is doing is adding another charge to put on them instead of preventing anything.

It's a political forum and I have to tell you, this site is extremely mild compared to the vast majority of them out there. Those that disagree with each other treat each other much better than what I see on other sites. Politicians are "fair game" and often need to be "slammed" and to be quite honest, they're much worse on one another than anything I've ever read in this forum. I'm pretty sure that even Nixon spoke out concerning George Wallace's shooting in the '72 campaign.

All of those listed above had national figures involved in national movements or interests. And they were targeted for their beliefs and convictions. So the President should act as the leader of the nation in those events.

 

Except for the politicization of this event at a national level it was mostly a local, yet tragic, event. But since it was turned into a national event by the media (that includes all the cables, including FOX) the president had to do the ceremony. My comments may have appeared to bash Obama. But I think he had to do it.

 

But I was in Houston when Reagen did the memorial for the astronautics. This just was not the same.

I agree with you, LN, and am guilty as charged. I've dialed up the rhetoric on occassion. I'll be the first to say that I am wrong for doing so. I think that this incident has made me re-examine my own interactions with others politically.

 

In reading up on Congresswoman Gifford, I think that she and I hold many of the same political positions and her words to Trey Grayson the night before the shooting touched me. She mentioned the need to work together to make politics civil again. I'll say, too, that I think that President Obama's speech the other night made an impression on me. I do want my country to be worthy of the dreams of our children. Maybe I need to look at what I believe in politically and morally and what is the right way to discuss politics in a civil manner.

 

So, yes, I'm guilty, but I want to be better and am ready to call myself out first and find a way to be on the right track from here on out. I hope that others will follow. I'm sure that we'll all make mistakes, but I'm going to personally try to do better.

 

As always, LN, I enjoy reading your posts and wish that we could go back to a time in which there were more of them in this forum.

It's a rather lame attitude to think you can tell me what I can and can't say about the politicians that are in ELECTED office. Criticism goes with the territory, you should know that. What's unfair? Talking about their family? Absolutely. Their stupid mistakes, lies, crazy ideas, bad bills, bad laws, etc? Hell No! Also, sometimes people are having a little fun at their expense over the small matters, have a sense of humor about it for crying out loud and quit taking it so personal. You can darn well bet the farm that if I feel my ELECTED OFFICIALS need to be criticized I'll continue to do so. If you can't handle that, I'm sorry, but it won't change anything. Nothing personal LN, but I don't need to have someone talk down to me nor will I stand for it.

First off, don't be so hard on yourself, you really haven't been offensive or dialed up the rhetoric all that much. You've always struck me as a very honest, fair person.

I'm really not surprised you don't see the need to change any thing and you will continue starting thread after thread after thread criticizing Obama and every D you can, for every reason you can. And those of similar persuasion on the other side, will do the same about Rs. Rhetoric will fly. People will polarize. Emotions will get high. All in the name of "criticism goes with the territory" and "you can't tell me what I can't say".

What can I say, I believe in free speech. Oh, and just to be clear, there are plenty on the right I have problems with as well. Politicians in general are reaping what they've sown where criticism is concerned. I don't think it should get nasty (as in violent) but otherwise, yes, they need to be criticized.

I don't listen to Rush, Beck, Deters or Hannity, I can't stand them. And Cunningham I listen to very rarely anymore and when I do it's for comic relief. Funny thing is, I haven't even started a thread about Obama in months.

LN, I've always considered you a friend, I certainly wouldn't let a disagreement over politics get in the way of that nor do I think you would. I just stand up for what I believe in, always will.
