January 8, 201115 yr For the record, I don't believe the president controls gas prices but I most certainly do think he can affect them. Of course he can and so could have Bush but Bush was an oil man. Obama hasn't really had gas prices on his agenda like he did promise. I think he is waiting for them to get above 3.50 then he will put his cape on and come flying in right before 2012.
January 8, 201115 yr How? How about going after the speculators, they determine gas prices now-a-days with their pawns at OPEC.
January 8, 201115 yr How about going after the speculators, they determine gas prices now-a-days with their pawns at OPEC. That I agree with. I think you have to get oil out of the market.

January 8, 201115 yr To really put a stop to what's going on with gas prices, two things could happen to make a change. The first thing is to start drilling what we have here, which I'm clueless as to why this has not started already. The next thing is an idea that a good friend of mine and his father talked about a while back. Both of those guys are very familar with the transportation/logistics industry, owning some diesel trucks, tractor trailers, are licensed as freight brokers, and more. Anyway, my friend's father said what needs to happen is that everyone that owns or hauls a truck for shipping, delivering, etc. needs to stop for 24 hours all over the U.S. If that happens, some havoc will be created and would definitely make many in the oil industry consider what could come if the prices continue as they have been. I know the idea sounds kind of out there, but I believe that it would definitely send a message. Any disruption by the "stop for 24 hours" idea would be like a zit on an elephant's rear end.
January 8, 201115 yr China's strongest-ever manufacturing numbers are driving much of this increase in price because of a continued shortage in supply. Venezuela and Saudi Arabia have both said that the triple-digit oil price is fair to the consumer and producer as well as it being necessary to fund continued oil exploration. It's only going to get worse. The supply of cheap oil is not there to meet rising worldwide demand.
January 8, 201115 yr Cars.com, been on it all week, have to get rid of our SUV. 15 MPG, runs on high octane.

Clyde brother don't let the speculators fool you, we are in talks with Canada about building a massive pipeline, so big they said we could cancel orders with mideast counties or Venz. Iraq is also producing oil now, they are a gold mine, they could rival the Saudi's easily. There will always be oil and there will always be greed. We crossed with some of the big OPEC countries in the early 2000's and they have made us pay for it literally. Oil isn't going anywhere, not in our lifetime or our kids, it just depends on how much it will cost due to speculative abuse and greed in OPEC.
January 8, 201115 yr Cars.com, been on it all week, have to get rid of our SUV. 15 MPG, runs on high octane. Take what ya can and get rid of it. Now that the recession is over... $3.00 is here to stay. Good luck with it.
January 9, 201115 yr How?Policies and just things they say to the media can cause speculators to get "nervous". Guess what happens next.

January 10, 201115 yr Gas price at same station today (Sunday): 2 p.m. - $3.03 4:30 p.m. - $2.99 7:30 p.m. - $3.15 Interesting intra-day, weekend price changing.
January 10, 201115 yr Look at it this way. It is a sign that the economy has improved. Banks and oil are the first to profit. They ain't dummies.
January 10, 201115 yr I know that he can't set them but he can step in and help control them. If he can save companies with government money then why can't he step in and help control the gas prices. How? How about going after the speculators, they determine gas prices now-a-days with their pawns at OPEC. That I agree with. I think you have to get oil out of the market. There's the answer to your question, WR. Imagine that you are speculating on oil futures, & you know the current supply & demand. You are confident that oil prices will stay high with Obama, and you are speculating that way. Now imagine that the U.S. decides to allow increased drilling (off-shore, Alaska, new permits elsewhere); AND to allow the building of some new refineries. In that case you would fear that the future price of oil would go down, causing you to sell off; further causing prices to go down.
