Got to see quite a bit of Ryle's tryouts. The freshmen team looks like it will be very strong and have some outstanding pitching. I was very impressed by Trey Martin and Mason Forbes. Though I didn't get to see either of Erik Clarkson and Tom Deters (they were still playing basketball), I was told their pitching was outstanding.

I thought about you last week as I was out on "the campus" and saw the boys on the turf.

Not personal in the least, I hardly know the kid. And the name is Spata. The response was to your post that singled out the young man, not anything I said. Seems like you're the one taking this personally. MY point is that just because a kid plays at a smaller or less talented program (your words) doesn't mean he is a less talented player as you suggested. Personal? Uh, no, not hardly. You couldn't be farther off the mark on that statement. However, we agree that the unfortunate truth is that our sport receives little recognition in general as compared to some other sports. Maybe it's our own fault, maybe it's the rise in "other" activities for kids. There are ALOT of quality players in our area that go unnoticed at times. And by the way, a team's record is hardly a basis for comparison as far as talent or success. Not every team's schedule is equal in terms of quality of opponents. Coach Roberts has a quality program and plays a solid schedule.

I got to see a good amount of the Scott tryouts. I have mixed feeling about this team, 4 of the freshmen play JV or Varsity and the best infielder on the freshmen team has a shoulder injury and is out for 2 weeks. So i will split this into positives and negatives.

 

The positives: This team has some major talent. They have outstanding hitting. Almost every player can hit the ball with solid contact. They do have some hitters that may be moved on to JV because of the shortage of JV players this year. The infield seems to be solid. While their still trying to find some more pitchers, the pitchers that they have are excellent.

 

The Negatives- As i said before, it's true that they have some major talent, they also have some major problems. They are good hitters but some them really need to work on the defensive side of the game. And since there is a shortage of JV players this year, some of the experienced players from last year will be called up, leaving the new comers to learn the game slower. I said the infielders were a solid group but i didn't mention the outfielders. This is where they need to improve. They have some talent out there they just need to find a way to use it ( position changes? They have some outfielders that could be better infielders). And lastly the pitching. Like i said the group they have now is excellent but it's small. They have about 4-5 solid pitchers and in freshmen level they need to have about 6-9 because of high pitch counts.

 

Overall- I think this team will be average at the beginning of the year and later on becoming a good team. Their first game is March 22 against Ryle (I find it funny that the post above was about Ryle).

Jarrod Ball - Owen Co. Nolan Wilson- Gallatin Co. Daniel Tilley- Walton Verona and Tyler Carr- Grant Co. Ball is a competitor and very sound SS for the Rebels, Played Varsity as an 8th grader.

Wilson has the best hands of any kid I have ever seen. If its close to him he will catch it! Tilley can hit and is very competitive and played Varsity as an 8th grader. Carr has a cannon of an arm and knows how to pitch. Pitched in several Varsity games as an 8th grader. All play summer ball on some pretty good teams, Ball and Wilson on the KY Bucs (I think) Tilley-NKY Bandits and Carr the Cincinnati Flames.

Michael Mundy- Simon Kenton

Michael Mundy of Simon Kenton played for the Taylor Mill Titans along with Reed Spata, from what i can see Mundy was just as good if not better than Spata. Also Mundy attends a 6A school which means there are more kids competing for a spot unlike Spata of Scott. It should be interesting to watch these two play against each other their senior year. Dont get me wrong Spata is a good player but like i said, Mundy is just as good if not better than Spata.

Who did Mundy play with last summer? Spata played for Bluegrass last summer, Even though SK is a 6A school, I'm not for sure it's by no means a good measuring stick of schools to play for...

I rarely promote our own players BUT I think Nate Verst who made an impact on the hardwood this past basketball season will crack Brossart's lineup at some point this season, if not from the outset, and make a major contribution to the baseball Mustangs as well. Played for Midland last summer.

I agreee, Nate is a very good baseball player.
