In 1978 I played in a State Semi-Finals game in Ohio at the Akron Rubber Bowl. It was the first week of December, and the temp at kickoff was 30 degrees, with freezing rain and sleet. The astro-turf then was one of the worst surfaces I've ever seen. It was like fuzzy concrete. We were all bloody and bruised. The worst part was the wind was blowing about 25 mph, so the wind chill was way below zero. I ended up with frostbite on my little toe, and to top it of we lost in triple OT to Berea. Fumbled away the snap on 4th and goal at the one yard line---we were going for the win too--final was 6-3.

True, but at the end of the season you can't have a big barbeque with a school bus.

.... :lol: and you raised a good point. Field conditions, playing through injuries, advancement in equipment have came a long way in the last 25-30 years.

 

Helmets are better, cleats are different and so many more pads.

For me it was the "Snow Bowl" winter of 1999. The Catholic School Yard was covered with about 6 inches of snow. C. Harmon, D.Hall, and B. Gullett defeated T. Harmon, C. Johnson, and S. Simpkins to win the Snow Bowl. That game was a test of skill, endurance, and sanity. I think I passed 2 of the 3.

Allowed? Heck, I thought it was required.

 

I remember playing in Junior High School - our helmets were the old style that had the ear molded into the outside of the shell, and the helmets actually had a "suspension system" to soften the blow.

 

We were playing a game at Rock Hill, OH and Mark Maynard (Sports Editor at the Daily Independent) had a helmet to helmet hit with a running back coming off tackle. Maynard's helmet was so old and dry rotted, it literally split in two. When he came off the field our coach (and I use that term loosely) held the two halves of Mark's helmet up for everyone to see, and proudly said "Now that's the way you hit people!"

I know 1 thing..IT'S GONNA BE COLD TONIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember that night in '97, I didn't go but I did go to a basketball game at Scott. It was brutally cold and very windy if I recall.

The coldest night was when Boyle Co. was playing at Paducah Tilghman in a 2003 playoff game. It was so cold that the washers in my jugs were freezing. :lol:

Coldest football game that I can remember was the 1999 Middlesboro vs. Boyle County semi-final game.

I once played in a street game...it was so cold that my dog got stuck to the fire hydrant!

6th grade we played in a Bowl game down at Whitley County in 3 or 4 inches of snow. It wasn't snowing at the time but it was cold as all get out. The worst part had to be the field. Some spots were muddy and other spots where the snow had be trampled was hard as a rock. IT was really bad when we fell into one of those mud puddles that had a thin sheet of ice on it. I felt like a Green Bay Packer in those conditions.
