December 14, 201015 yr Who is to say the guys mentioned above weren't contacted in some way. There is a lot of phone calls made in situations like these. Those guys may not want to leave their current situations for a pressure cooker like UF. As for history, with the exception of Zook and possible Shula, the above list of coaches didn't take over a program with caliber talent Florida has, or the caliber talent Florida is capable of getting. My whole argument (which is boring to some I guess) is don't say a coach will be a bust before he has ever coached his first game....I once thought Billy G was a good hire as well! What Wojo from Duke took over at UK basketball? It's the same thing, its tough for a first time coach to go to a top level program.

December 14, 201015 yr Basketball and football is a totally different animal...although the assistant at Memphis who took over for Cal seems to be doing alright... Just made my point. Memphis basketball would be about like WIsconsin football. Not UF, they're better than that IMO.

December 14, 201015 yr I didn't realize Wisconsin had played in the National championship game in the last two years...I must have missed that one! How many national championships does Memphis have? Let's no act like they are anywhere clos to the UKs, Dukes, and UNCS of the world. You are getting crazy man:lol:. You like kthe hire, I get that and that is fine. But it is risky to hire a hirst time coach at a program like that. You said maybe Patterson or Peetersen could not handle the heat at a program like UF, don't you think that would be even tougher on a first timer? I'm done with this argument, there are a bunch of articles that have been written the last few days on various sports outlets that will agree and give more facts to go along with why this was such as strange and potentially bad hire. If the best UF can do is a first time coach, they are not the program they make themselves out to be.
December 14, 201015 yr Do you take a chance on an up and comer from a smaller program? or do you hire a coordinator who has worked for some of the best in the business (Kidd, Saban, Brown) who understands the pressures of the big time programs. Do you take a chance on an up and comer (Urban Meyer) from a smaller program (Utah) or do you hire a coordinator (Ron Zook) who has worked for some of the best in the business (Spurrier, Cowher, Haslett, Beamer) and understands the pressures of the big time programs (not to mention the NFL). Just sayin'.

Just sayin'. Let's not bring history or the facts into this. The fact that the last time Foley went down the road of an up and coming assistant was a huge failure should be enough for anyone to consider that this hire could be a huge failure.

Just sayin'. Hiring Coaches to Coach big time college athletics can be a crap shoot at best. I don't know if Muschamp will be a great hire, I do know that you can't say this is a bad hire at this time...the man has yet to coach a game...if in 3 years he hasn't won an SEC EAST title and FLorida is a 15-25 ranked team in the Country, I will then say this was a bad hire...until then I will give him his fair chance until he proves other wise. IMO you can't base what one coach will do on the past success or failures of other coaches. I state in my first post that all coaches have started out as first time head coaches at some point. I understand that everyone has an opinion. Maybe Ron Zook was on the borderline of doing what Urban Myer did at Florida... that is a question we will never know...obviously the cubboard was left pretty full for Myer... What was Zook's record his last year at UF?

What was Zook's record his last year at UF? Just answering your question with historical facts. No opinion behind it one way or the other. Zook was 7-4 (4-4) his last year. He left for Illinois before the Peach Bowl, in which Charlie Strong coached the Gators in a loss to Miami. His other 2 seasons, Florida finished 8-5 (6-2) with back to back appearances in the Outback. The Gators finished all three of his seasons in Gainville ranked no higher than 24 in any poll.
January 2, 201115 yr Am I right that I saw Charlie Weis (sp) is coming to Fla as the Off Coordinator? If so I'm suprised he is gone from KC so fast with them doing so well. I know he has a son w some problems so maybe it's more family time in college.

I believe it is his daughter that is handicapped or mentally retarded.

Source: Florida hires OC Charlie We From what this article says Weis is supposed to remain with the Chiefs throughout the NFL Playoffs.

January 2, 201115 yr Weis is a heck of a hire IMO. Maybe he wasn't the best head coach, but the man knows offense. However, I don't know that UF has the right players right now for the Weis offense, UF will need to give him some time.
January 3, 201115 yr I think goes to show the kind of respect that Muschamp has on the coaching circuit. To be able to lure a guy with Weis' resume in impressive. The one thing about Florida Personnel is that Brantley is a pro style QB. Florida has typically gone for the smaller quicker WR/RB (Harvin, Demps) ect which could go well with the short passing game implemented by Weis.
