December 12, 201015 yr I would prefer Holgersen over Applewhite if I were a UF fan. Texas Tech then Ok. St. offenses speak for themselves. His offense would be a better fit for Brantly- it would look more like the Ball Coach's old teams. I agree :thumb:. I just think Holgersen is going to end up somewhere like Pitt. If Malzahn doesn't end up at Vandy or another job, I'd throw some of the money they saved in not getting Stoops or Petersen at him. Would only be a short time fix, but I think that would really get all the UF fans pumped about Muschamp going forward.

December 12, 201015 yr Muschamp appears to be a good hire, but there’s no history to support the hire as a good one. Sometimes the best assistants are just that, IMO this hire is too much of a risk for a school like UF...
December 12, 201015 yr Muschamp appears to be a good hire, but there’s no history to support the hire as a good one. . How does one appear to be a good hire with no history to support the hire as a good one?
December 12, 201015 yr How does one appear to be a good hire with no history to support the hire as a good one? Really it seems pretty simple... Muschamp is 0-0 as a head coach, thus it only appears to be a good hire (no history to support it)... The point is, sometimes top assistants are never any better than top assistants. Charlie Weis ring a bell?

The point is, sometimes top assistants are never any better than top assistants. Charlie Weis ring a bell? I agree. I don't think a program like UF should ever hire an assistant. They pay 4 times what the average coach makes, and have unlimited resources. No excuse to go with an OC or DC who is a first-time coach. Not that I'm mad about it.
December 13, 201015 yr Here are some other top assistants that appeared to be good hire's, history proved otherwise. Ron Zook Ray Goff Brad Scott Sylvester Crooms Ed Orgeron Mike Shula Joe Kines I will name a few Coaches that started out as assistants and turned out ok: Nick Saban Pete Caroll Jim Tressell Mack Brown Urban Myer ect... Everyone has to start somewhere.

Your right, that’s why I said this hire "appears" to be a good... But don't be surprised if UF is searching for a coach in three years... People seem to forget how demanding the UF fan base is, do you realize that Muschamp is going to have to compete with Saban, Petrino, Chizic, Richt, Miles, Spurrier and Mullen, not to mention, the other BCS schools in his state. Even a slight swing in talent could be a major setback for a 1st time coach...
December 13, 201015 yr Pitt apparently just offered the job to Al Golden... And he accepted.... The Miami (FL) job.

Is this a joke? Every coach starts out as an assistant. What he was trying to say is that it usually doesn't work out good when an assistants first HC job is a major one. Nick Saban- First job Toledo. Then Michigan State. Then LSU. Then the Dolphins. Then Bama. Pete Carroll- NFL HC took the Pats to the Super Bowl. Then USC. Jim Tressell- Coach at Youngstown State, extremely successful. Then OSU. Mack Brown- At a minimum (without research) HC at UNC before Texas. Urban Meyer- Bowling Green, Utah and then Florida. What coach just showed up and was successful in the modern Era at a big program? Lloyd Carr?
