December 13, 201015 yr Pretty sure Mack started out at Tulane, but I could be way off on that. :thumb: I'm sure he did start somewhere smaller, just didn't have it off the top of my head :thumb:.
December 13, 201015 yr Is this a joke? Every coach starts out as an assistant. What he was trying to say is that it usually doesn't work out good when an assistants first HC job is a major one. Nick Saban- First job Toledo. Then Michigan State. Then LSU. Then the Dolphins. Then Bama. Pete Carroll- NFL HC took the Pats to the Super Bowl. Then USC. Jim Tressell- Coach at Youngstown State, extremely successful. Then OSU. Mack Brown- At a minimum (without research) HC at UNC before Texas. Urban Meyer- Bowling Green, Utah and then Florida. What coach just showed up and was successful in the modern Era at a big program? Lloyd Carr? Pete Carroll did not take the Pats to the Superbowl. Bo Pelini would be another example but the jury may still be out on him. It does not happen often.

You're right my mistake. :thumb: And Pelini is a strange example, but a good one by you. I think that it was different when he took over Nebraska. They are definitely a top program in terms of prestige, but I would imagine less prestigious jobs like Florida or LSU may be more desirable. Nebraska does not have a great recruiting base in state, and I don't believe they pay as well as many other top programs. They were also not very good when Pelilni was offered the job. I think more than a few people felt that it would take alot for Nebraska to get back on track, something that it really wouldn't take at a place like say, Michigan. Of the top 10-15 programs, they would be one team that I would think should and would be more apt to taking an inexperienced HC for those reasons. Prestige-wise UF is a fringe top 10 job IMO, but Meyer built the program up to where it would have to be one of the top 5 in America right now if not higher. I just think UF severely overrates their program. If Muschamp does not fair well, the job will lose a lot of luster quickly IMO. The fan base is crazy, alot of them were hoping Meyer would leave during parts of this season, if you believe their message boards (which is crazy and stupid). Muschamp doing badly would put them behind FSU in the state, and Jimbo seems to be very good, though he would be another exception to our rule. JMO.
December 13, 201015 yr As Florida fan agree with Cats Cats Cats. Before Spurrier Florida not that big of a program. They had a good team every now and then. Since Spurrier and then Meyer Florida probably one of the two or three best jobs in country. Muschamp will have the pressure on because it looks like FSU is getting stronger again and Miami is trying to work their way back. A swing of a few real good players coming out of the Florida high school system could swing the balance of power back to FSU or Miami. As Florida fan hope Gators can stay on top in state of Florida because over the last 25 years or some best team in Florida has either been best team in the nation or close to it.

As for the best team in Florida, they have only beaten Miami once in the last 25 years, but that is neither here nor there.....

December 14, 201015 yr He was going to eventually succeed Mack Brown at Texas. Guess that is what happens when you don't put a time table on when that would happen.
December 14, 201015 yr I have some doubts about Muschamp, a coach that earned his reputation as a defensive coordinator in a league in which defense sometimes seems optional ... This year agree Auburn not that strong on the defensive side of the ball but past two years Alabama and Florida both very strong on the defensive side of the ball.
December 14, 201015 yr Bob Stoops? Butch Davis? Solid point on Stoops and Butch Davis. I will say that Davis and Lloyd Carr had the advantage of already being on the staff.
December 14, 201015 yr :thumb: I think Muschamp was a huge risk-reward hire. As for the best team in Florida, they have only beaten Miami once in the last 25 years, but that is neither here nor there..... Name a Coach with a better pedigree that Florida could have hired? Do you take a chance on an up and comer from a smaller program? or do you hire a coordinator who has worked for some of the best in the business (Kidd, Saban, Brown) who understands the pressures of the big time programs. Do you not think that Muschamp had pressure and scrutiny at Texas...I understand he had a different title, but "GUYS" like Muschamp are driven by ego and put more pressure on themselves to succeed than most fan bases can...

Chris Petersen, Gary Patterson or Dan Mullen. I don't know if you're a UF fan or not but the fact is that guys given the keys to their first job at a high major school just do not have a track record of working out. We've come up with 3 guys who did work out. Well Butch Davis never won squat, though he did put together the most talented team of all-time IMO. But who is to say he would have won a title with that team, can't say for certain? Lloyd Carr got run out of town. Stoops is really the exception to the rule. Say what you want but the odds are against Muschamp working out, do you think he's the only guy that has had pedigree of the ones mentioned that failed? The first time mistakes that all coaches make have been proven to be too much for most first timers to be able to handle at a Big-Time job. If Muschamp messes up and doesn't get to a SEC Title game by year 2 do you think Gator Nation will stand for that following Urban Meyer?
December 14, 201015 yr He was going to eventually succeed Mack Brown at Texas. Guess that is what happens when you don't put a time table on when that would happen. I have nothing to base this on besides reading between the lines but I don't get the feeling the two of them really like each other all that much.

Who is to say the guys mentioned above weren't contacted in some way. There is a lot of phone calls made in situations like these. Those guys may not want to leave their current situations for a pressure cooker like UF. As for history, with the exception of Zook and possible Shula, the above list of coaches didn't take over a program with caliber talent Florida has, or the caliber talent Florida is capable of getting. My whole argument (which is boring to some I guess) is don't say a coach will be a bust before he has ever coached his first game....I once thought Billy G was a good hire as well!
