Report: Booster received payment plan for Newton

Featured Replies

Mississippi State booster Bill Bell told ESPN.com that he received a payment plan designed to get Cam Newton to sign with the Bulldogs from a man who said he represented the quarterback’s father.

Bell, a former Mississippi State player, said Kenny Rogers sent him a text message outlining a payment schedule that included $80,000 on the day Newton signed, $50,000 30 days later and $50,000 30 days after that. Rogers, who has worked for an agent, is also a former Mississippi State player.

Must've been a long text message. I can only send 160 characters per text.

He most certainly is "The Gambler". Sounds like he didn't know when to "fold em", though.

I could easily make that fit...

Terms:

$80K signing day

$50K 30 days after

$50K 60 days after

Well within the 160 character limit...:D

Well if this is true, it is a possibility that Cam Newton wasn't aware of his father's actions and thus wouldn't be liable. There are stipulations within the NCAA that say if the player-in-question wasn't aware of the circumstances concerning his eligibility then the player isn't at fault. I believe this is what happened with Maggette case at Duke not all that long ago.

Well played.

SHOW, from what I underdstand he is in trouble if his dad did this. Remember the NCAA has their own set of rules, and he could also be in trouble if no money actually changes hands and they just talk about it. $ 180K for the Bulldogs, $200K for other teams. We can figure out the rest of the story.

Duke is not Auburn. So, I'd be worried if I pulled for Auburn. Auburn has a history with the NCAA.

I could have sworn they said if no money changed hands it wouldn't be that major. Where it's his father I could see how it would be bad for Auburn. What about Mississippi State though? They at least had conversations about paying him. It's not like they just hung up.

Mississippi State did report it...I would think their penalty will be a lot less than Auburn if they ended up going through with it.

FWIW I thought I heard that the cell phone with this text has been damaged by water and the text can't be retrieved. If so, it sounds more fishy than the actual thought at this point.

That's simply not true. A cell phone company can pull the record up if ordered to due so. It doesn't matter if the phone is in the bottom of the ocean.

When will people learn that all criminal activities should be done in person. No text, voicemails or paper trails. Geez some people!
