Boone County 2010/2011

Featured Replies

Boone has great players on this years team. Guard play and coaching will be the problem. The coach at Boone never seems to get the job done. I feel like Coach Fookes can make an average team with little talent into a regional championship team. Mcquery on the other hand is given some of the best players year in and year out and always manages to fall short of what they should be accomplishing. If Boone tries to run the coaches plays every possession instead of just playing the game they will be beat and beat often. If he lets the boys play to there ability they will win the regional championship. This team is good. This years group of seniors won the freshman title and the past two Jv titles.

Success at the freshman and JV level do not equate to Varsity success. The talent is spread differently at all of the high schools' three levels once kids reach high school. Some JV teams are younger and/or older than other JV teams. Also, high schools usually end up moving up a freshman or two to the JV team, which makes some freshman teams weaker.

I understand that. Just saying this group is vey talented and has lost very few games together.

He tried out last year too, didn't make it. He is a quick guard and great defender. He is Charles Quaino's (sp) cousin.

Any sophomores going to sniff the varsity floor?

I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned Jakeith Pitts...transfer from Holmes.

Kid is a player and had a huge summer with NKY Heat. He is very quick, athletic, and quite the shooter. Many who have seen him compared him to Holmes two most successful point guards...Jamel Riley and Braeon Avery. Has Avery's quickness and aggressiveness with Riley's smooth ball handling and shot.

Boone has a good one out there. Don't be surprised if he ends up starting.

Coaching will not be a problem. I've been following Boone Boys Basketball since Jay Mulcahy was the coach. I get sick and tired of hearing people bash Coach McQueary. He has a 110-65 record (.629 winning pct.) at Boone. He has coached against a Holmes team that has had the best run of NKY basketball in quite some time. He has beaten them once in regular season and came within a basket of beating them in the 2009 region finals when Holmes won the state. He runs great plays in the half court and despite some people's complaints, does let the team run at times. He has been blessed with good players without a doubt, but at times those players would constantly fight his system instead opting to 'do their own thing'. If you want to watch run and gun, no defense, no fundamental basketball, go watch AAU. For me, I love seeing a disciplined team running good plays, getting good shots, and being able to defend people. Being voted coach of the year twice by the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches and once by the NK Boys Basketball Coaches Association says volumes of how Coach McQueary is thought of by his peers. I, for one, am a fan.

Agree with most everything you said. Sometimes the coaches awards are kinda feel sorry for you coach awards though IMO. I do think he is underrated as a coach and takes a bashing on here from folks that don't understand high school hoops.

Great post my friend. Coach McQueary can flat out coach. The numbers don't lie. It's hard for me to sit here and read the negative comments about him. Seems like they are coming from disgruntled parents and not true fans of the game. I for one am a fan of the game, and coach M understands it and knows how to teach it.

I agree with you that Coach McQueary is a good coach and understands the game, however, the AAU comment is painting with a broad stroke. Additionally, you probably are referring to AAU and meant to say "select". Regardless, I know alot of select teams/programs that emphasize defense and fundamentals.

He is not a good coach at all. Somethings messed up at Boone County. Every coach at that school has a son playing under them. Thompson's son played Qb. You saw how that turned out. And McQueary's son and the Jv's Coach's son Cooper Downs, are both starting this year. To me I think the transfer from New York (Charles Quanoo's cousin) should get the starting job. And lastly McQueary's son (Zane) is way to slow and inexperienced to be starting. Chase Stanely is an outstanding ball player and should get the start over him.

Boone has scrimmaged Colerain and Bishop Brossart.

Does anyone have an update on those scrimmages? I heard Boone won both, however, didn't get any details....

How has Brown and Montgomery looked? How is the guard play?

Anyone knocking down threes consistantly in the scrimmages?

This will be the last thing you see this season. Boone Co will run a deliberate offense and focus on getting the ball in the hands of their big's and scoring within 15 feet. They have the size to do this and even when they had 3 pt shooters in the past they didnt utilize them or McQueary likely frowned upon them.

Who honestly is a 3pt threat on this team?

I 100% agree with you Qryche11

I really don't know, can Downs shoot? What about the new guys? If you can knock down the outside shots it will at least make teams come out a little bit, especially since they run that motion offense. I'm thinking teams are going to pack it in on Boone if they can't hit some outside jumpers. Just my thought.

Where did McQuery coach before coming to Boone? How did he do there? How long has he been at Boone?

I believe he had a losing record in about 10 years before coming to Boone. May have been at McCreary Central? and possibly one other school? No regional championships. Maybe a couple district championships. I think 2004 was his first season at Boone.

Correction, he coached at Caldwell Co., and Bardstown Independent before that:

At Caldwell:

03/04: 7-19 record, Lost 1st district game

02/03: 8-17, 1 and out in district

01/02 11-16, 1 and out

00/01 14-14, dist runner up, lost first round regional tourney

99/00 12-14, 1 and out

98/99 15-13, dist runner up, loast first regiional game

97/98 8-18, 1 and out

Prior to that was Bardstown, where I believe there was similar or less success.

I'm surprised Boone co., one of the largest schools in the state, would hire a coach who had only one about 40% of games over a 10-15 year period before that.
