I think they are the best team in years...the TEAM is not just defined by its record. Yes, the fans, and especially the players expected more out of their season than what they got. But one of the main differences in this team versus those in recent history (the last ten years or so) is that they never gave up. They fought through every loss, kept playing even when down. They hung with Ashland until the end of the 4th quarter before the tide turned. They beat Raceland and Russell, BIG Rivaly games and that always feels good. They lost in a heartbreaker to Rowan County (in the last 10 seconds) and they left everything they had on the field.

 

This is the first year in a long time we have not had boys quitting the team in mid year. We have had more fans in the stands than ever before. The community support is beginning to improve (even to include more support on the forums.) The core group of this 35 member TEAM have played together since 2-3rd grade JFL. They have seen several head coaches come and go during that time period. They have stuck it out through many a losing season. They have bonded together in a way that they will remember for the rest of their lives. They have hopefully sent a message to our younger players in JFL and middle school that if you stick together good things can happen. Could the record have been better? YES Am I, and more importantly are they, a little dissapointed on not getting a district title, Sure. BUT Dissapointed in this TEAM???? NEVER.

My senior year in HS, we were 3-8. I wish it had been better, but when you are competing, you don't really look @ the scoreboard, think about being behind, etc. - you just play as hard as you can. My point is that even if the number of wins is not what the kids/fans wanted, they competed hard and had a great experience on the field. Whether you won or lost doesn't really impact the experience until the game is over- or at least that was what it was like for me since we weren't very good. I was blessed with teammates that played hard, and a GREAT person & coach to lead us- Larry French. I will always be grateful to Coach French for hanging in there with us. We did end up winning our last 2 games and playing much better. I learned alot about leading in tough times and how you treat people during tough times in the way that Coach French took care of us during those tough days.

 

BGPreps has its place, and it is a forum for fans. Guru does a good job keeping it classy. But, the GAME is for the KIDS. I don't want one kid to feel like they have been a disappointment, underachieved, etc.

 

I know or know the family of a couple of the Greenup kids. The two kids I am thinking of played their guts out every Friday night. They have absolutely nothing to be disappointed in. They have earned my respect, although they already had it.

 

Some will say it is sour grapes because we have never won a state title here in football, but I am really tired of the ALL OR NOTHING school of thought. You don't have to win every game and a state title to be successful. You don't have to be 1st team all state and get a D1 scholarship to be successful. All any of us can do is our absolute best effort. If that falls short of the expectations of others, so be it.

 

To all the players getting ready for the playoffs: Have fun & do your best. If you really prepare the best you can, and play as hard as you can, you won't have regrets. But, please enjoy it because HS Football really is different/special and there is nothing like PLAYING HS football when it is over.

 

To the players who are finished for the season: It has probably been a rough year, but be proud of yourself for fighting through it- alot of adults would have thrown in the towel a long time ago. Those life lessons and the development of your character and toughness will pay big dividends for you as an adult.

Greenup played hard against Mason, the only game I saw Greenup play. They never quit.

 

In high school I was a basketball player. At 6' 3" I was the center and tallest player on my team and the shortest center in our league. Four times we played teams on which the point guard was the only player on the other starting 5 shorter than me, twice the other center was 7 foot. We managed to win half our games by hustling like crazy and shooting well. One of my proudest moments was when I out rebounded and out scored that 7 footer for a half. (He was an all-stater who got a scholarship to Tennessee.) No success is not always measured by the number of wins you have. I suppose Grantland Rice is passe these days, but I still believe in his words:

For when the One Great Scorer comes,

To write against your name,

He marks - not that you won or lost -

But how you played the Game.

I'm not into the win all or nothing!! Talking State championship. But to come in second, third or fourth in the district is a disappointment. My son plays. And I know for a fact he is very disappointed about this year. 6-4 is very disappointing to him. When you go into the season the first thing you strive for is winning the district. Anything less is a disapointment. This thing of being happy for underachieving isn't good for anything in life lessons. Of course I'm talking team and not individuals. With the thinking of some of the statements above losing is ok. You'll get a trophy anyway!! No wonder we have 20 million people on food stamps. Or some type government asst. We can't say anything bad about little Johnnie. He may get upset. I want our coaches in my sons face when he is lazy. I want them in his face when we lose!!I want that coach to expect more then he can give. He will be a better man someday for it!! And I do love my son!! I EXPECT him to work hard and be the BEST!! I EXPECT our team to be the best! SORRY!!!

PureFan, we've watched these boys since they were lil ones, nice post, I am still pondering exactly what I am going to post, however sometimes silence is golden...

C'mon folks --if the score did'nt count we would'nt keep it. There is no shame in coming out on the short end of the stick in an atheletic contest. The question was ask , i assumed , in the context of wins and loses. Yes , football builds character in all that play it , but that wasn't the question. I don't think they did enough to overcome the long history of being a losing program. just my opinion I'm hidinout.

It sounds like you were undersized most of the time. But fought really hard. And that is something to be proud of. But as a TEAM not individuals. I believe this Greenup Co team was a big disappointment! ( JMO) Greenup Co has some very skilled players. And a couple proved it every friday how good they are. But as a TEAM I think they didn't do as well as they should have. All you heard was wait till the season starts!! It started and is now almost time to turn the lights out!! Something has to be wrong. Was it coaching? Was it that the talent wasn't as good as they thought? What was it? What happened? Fans and coaches all thought this was the year!! With all the preseason talk coming out about how good this team is. And now the back tracking because the team didn't perform as well as expected in the win and loss stats. Kind of blows me away. With this kind of thinking can Greenup Co ever be a power in football? Is this how they think in Bell Co, Trinity, Highlands, LCA, ect... Is this kind of thinking how all the teams above became really good year after year. Not just one good one and wait another 15 years for another one to come around!! I guess in a few years we can expect Greenup Co to come up with another power team that goes 5-5.

I think a combination of both.

Something has to be wrong. Was it coaching? Was it that the talent wasn't as good as they thought? What was it? What happened? Fans and coaches all thought this was the year!!

 

Some times expectations are simply unrealistic. It takes a ton of talent to have a truly good football team. There are 22 positions to fill. Some guys can go both ways most of the time but not many. It wears the players out. I'm guessing people saw the talent in Corey Lyle and the other better players and thought they would carry the team. This can happen in basketball. But football requires a lot more talent.

 

My son plays for Mason. He had nothing negative to say about Greenups players and complimented their defensive tactics. I'm thinking expectations were simply too high.

Maybe GC fans didn't expect Rowan and Lawrence to be as good as they are this season? It was a pretty tough district at the top. There is no shame in coming in 3rd in that district I don't think.

Maybe this has been said before, but I think the heartbreaking loss to Rowan took the winds out of the Muskies' sails. Lawrence was always going to beat Greenup this year, but second place was definitely in the picture until the Rowan loss. Not saying they gave up after that (they beat who they were supposed to beat), but with the romps over rivals Raceland and Russell (note my clever use of alliteration), there was some momentum that looked like it might translate to a 7-win season; now a 3-seed and a long trip to Knox Central.

I don't know anything about Knox other than what's on the scoreboard (only losses were by 1 to Johnson Central and by 14 to Bell County so they're no pushover), maybe the Muskies can ride on Lyle's back and come back to Lloyd with an upset win.:thumb:

 

Out of curiosity, I went back and looked at the "Greenup County 2010" thread. Lots of positive expectations about a senior-laden team. I didn't see anyone claiming they would be world-beaters; but hopes were justifiably high.

Coach, I normally agree with about everything you post, and I'm sure there should be a lot of reading between the lines in what you say here. But, we fail sometimes. We fail, and the measure of a man is how he responds to that failure more then how many times he fails. We overachieve sometimes, those are special moments. And in football, as you know I'm sure, we overachieve some and we fail some. Now, we can argue about the semantics of the definition of "fail", and "disappointment", but I am speaking in terms of we set a goal and did not achieve that goal as "fail" or "disappointment". Those are not meant to be dirty words. Heck, my team has failed some this season as well. I'm not picking on a team and saying things that I wouldn't say about my team.
