Some times expectations are simply unrealistic. It takes a ton of talent to have a truly good football team. There are 22 positions to fill. Some guys can go both ways most of the time but not many. It wears the players out. I'm guessing people saw the talent in Corey Lyle and the other better players and thought they would carry the team. This can happen in basketball. But football requires a lot more talent.

 

My son plays for Mason. He had nothing negative to say about Greenups players and complimented their defensive tactics. I'm thinking expectations were simply too high.

When I saw this post, I had to say something concerning the other teams that has played at Greenup County. The measure of a man is determined whether he continues on after the "failures", how he continues on. Both of my sons played football at Greenup, the oldest son graduated in 2007 and the youngest in 2009. These were not good seasons, with new head coaches, new athletic directors, new administration and many other "new" things going on. I am very proud of my two sons, they never quit, walked off the field, threatened to quit, or as far as I know disrespectful to any coach. They loved football, they weren't the stars of the team, they just wanted to play and they did play. Now one is a senior at Morehead State, a geology major and tells us he has plans to join the Navy and become an officer, the youngest is a Sophomore at Ashland Community College and wants to be a Special Ed teacher and football coach. They took something from those "bad" seasons and learned from that and they still are proud of being a Greenup Musketeer, they were thankful for the opportunity that was given to them. I love football but it still is a game and I'm glad my sons took the lessons they learned from football. Now to the original question, was this a disappointing year, maybe but ask any mom or dad in the stand they will tell you it was a great season to see their son play football for their home team. This probably sounds "corny" and "stupid" to some of the die hard fans but sometimes you need to step back and be thrilled that you have healthy sons that can play football, some parents are not that lucky.

This tells me a couple of things. Mom55 is a great fan and more important a great mother with great sons that has taken in what high school football is supposed to be about and supposed to teach.

All of us can learn a lesson, be reminded of what this great sport of h.s. football is supposed to be about from this post.

Should the question be "best in history" then this years GCHS team is far from that. I don't know if anyone on here remembers or not but GC football was not only a local power but a state power. I don't remember the exact year in the 70's (around 75 or 76 I beieve) but Greenup County won a State 4A State Championship. Bill Trent was the coach, all of his teams at GC were very good.

This seasons GC team imo was the best they have had in quite a few years anyway.

Arn't expectations high every year for GC. A Disappointment no they lost to some real good teams. Ashland, Lawrence, Coal Grove, Rowan, and Mason all got wins from GC. So before this thread turns into a bash Greenup thread ask yourself a question. Is losing to these quality teams really considered a dissapointing season? I'm sure some people had unrealistic goals for this team but doesn't everyone for their home team. The boys played hard and layed a foundation for future Musketeers and I am proud of them.

My senior year in HS, we were 3-8. I wish it had been better, but when you are competing, you don't really look @ the scoreboard, think about being behind, etc. - you just play as hard as you can. My point is that even if the number of wins is not what the kids/fans wanted, they competed hard and had a great experience on the field. Whether you won or lost doesn't really impact the experience until the game is over- or at least that was what it was like for me since we weren't very good. I was blessed with teammates that played hard, and a GREAT person & coach to lead us- Larry French. I will always be grateful to Coach French for hanging in there with us. We did end up winning our last 2 games and playing much better. I learned alot about leading in tough times and how you treat people during tough times in the way that Coach French took care of us during those tough days.

 

BGPreps has its place, and it is a forum for fans. Guru does a good job keeping it classy. But, the GAME is for the KIDS. I don't want one kid to feel like they have been a disappointment, underachieved, etc.

 

I know or know the family of a couple of the Greenup kids. The two kids I am thinking of played their guts out every Friday night. They have absolutely nothing to be disappointed in. They have earned my respect, although they already had it.

 

Some will say it is sour grapes because we have never won a state title here in football, but I am really tired of the ALL OR NOTHING school of thought. You don't have to win every game and a state title to be successful. You don't have to be 1st team all state and get a D1 scholarship to be successful. All any of us can do is our absolute best effort. If that falls short of the expectations of others, so be it.

 

To all the players getting ready for the playoffs: Have fun & do your best. If you really prepare the best you can, and play as hard as you can, you won't have regrets. But, please enjoy it because HS Football really is different/special and there is nothing like PLAYING HS football when it is over.

 

To the players who are finished for the season: It has probably been a rough year, but be proud of yourself for fighting through it- alot of adults would have thrown in the towel a long time ago. Those life lessons and the development of your character and toughness will pay big dividends for you as an adult.

 

So........ "best team in years", depends on how you define it. "Disappointment"- NO!

Exactly what football should be about. Many times it's not about the wins or loses, but what the young men learn from those wins and loses. Great job, and congratulations Mom55 on having some great sons.

I don't think anyone is bashing Greenup, just a conversation about local football. Personally, I think this years Greenup County team is one the most talented that I have seen at Greenup, just some hard games to win. Many would argue to be a good team: you have to win all the games that you are supposed to win, and win one or two that you are not supposed to win. I think Greenup won all the games they were supposed to, but they let a few slip away that would have really set this team apart from other Greenup teams. Namely Coal Grove, Rowan County, and they had a great opportunity to beat Ashland.

^^ Very good evaluation. They win one or both those toss up games and finish 6-4 or 7-3 it sounds( and in reality is ) much better than 5-5.
