Know rules, mechanics and HUSTLE. It truely has been amazing to me over the 30 years I've coached and officiated how many officials don't know the rules, where they are suppose to be and what they are responsible for. So many are simply lazy and do not try. Officials in Ky need to be held accountable. They need to be rated by unbiased source. Also, I think officials should not call with the same crew each week. I think white hat should be given a game and individuls officials should be assigned to him.

 

While I agree that there are "some" lazy officials who officiate for no other reason than get a game check, the vast majority of officials in Ky are hard working ladies and gentlemen who are sincere & dedicated and officiate for the love of the game, the schools, and the student athletes. I know for a fact that in Northern Ky, the officials of the NKOA are held accountable. Matter of fact, the person in charge of the Northern Ky officials has suspended several officials throughout the years for various infractions. Also, the head trainer for that association reviews every game film, and grades the officials on their collective and individual performances. The officials are also rated by the coaches and are evaluated during a game at least once or twice a year, depending on the availability of the evaluator. As far as working on crews, I don’t think that there is anything better than working with the same crew each week. I honestly believe that working with the same officials each week promotes stability. More often than not, if a crew member steps out of line, get’s lazy, misapplies a rule or does something to harm the integrity of the crew, the situation is usually handled in house by the crew.

Call me crazy, but I just want a ref to call the game according to the rule book. If the rule says the offense has 25 seconds to start a play, call delay of game as soon as the time has expired. No need to give them 30 seconds or more. If it's pass interference, call it, please don't try to determine whether it's bad enough to call.

I agree. As a coach I kept 25 sec on my watch. Other team went over 3 plays in a row. White hat told me he told back judge to give them 30 seconds. This white hat became an assigning sec. For a short time!

As a white hat I would not want to call a game each with with different officials. This year, I lost a member of of my crew for personal reason, and brought on a new member and it has taken us several weeks to find our way. When you work with the same guys you learn to trust them to call their area and you don't have to "over" officiate, or in other words I don't have to fish in another officials pond.

Just "chatted" with said trainer and he's sitting down right now to look at films.

A good official is knowledgeable, realistic, personable and shows interest in the game. They are not just there to get a check.

I officiate another sport and my mentor told me, "The game you are working is the most important game in the state that night. The kids and coaches have prepared very hard for this particular game and we need to work our hardest as well."

Amen brother. I have a friend who is an SEC referee and he says the exact same thing.

I don't know any school in the SEC that thinks we have good refs!

There is one white hat that i've seen twice this year(not the same teams) and if you do the EXACT OPPOSITE of what he did in those two games, you'd be a pretty good official. Guy was a joke! It was "his" game and not the kids. That is just wrong!
