HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. -- LeBron James and his manager say they believe race played a factor in how the two-time reigning NBA MVP's decision to join the Miami Heat was covered this summer.

 

Neither James nor his manager, Maverick Carter, cited specifics when talking to CNN for a story that aired Wednesday night.

 

James did not want to spend much time on the subject after Thursday's Heat practice.

 

"I think people are looking too far into it," James said. "But at the same time, sometimes it does play a part in it. I've said what I had to say, and I'll continue to move on."

 

In the interview, CNN correspondent Soledad O'Brien asked about "The Decision," the one-hour special on ESPN in which James announced that he would play for the Heat, and some of the negative headlines it generated.

 

"It's just about control and not doing it the way it's always been done or not looking the way that it always looks," Carter said.

 

O'Brien asked if race played a role.

 

"I think so at times," James said. "It's always, you know, a race factor."

 

Said Carter: "It definitely played a role in some of the stuff coming out of the media, things that were written for sure."

Look, the best thing for team LeBron to do is just be quiet. Every time they open their mouth, something stupid comes out. I love how this week LeBron reaffirmed that he is motivated and will turn all this criticism in to wins. Well, no crap Einstein. No person is disputing you will not win virtually every game. I really do not think he understands why he has gone from one of the most beloved to one of the most disliked athletes. In his mind he is thinking, "I will show all these haters by winning every game." No kidding? You have 3 of the top 15 players on your team. What else are we supposed to expect?

Race isn't way everyone began attacking LeBron. It's arrogance.

Considering the NBA is like 90% African American I doubt race played a factor.

I am just baffled by the amount of stupid comments and why he keeps talking?

I worried about him having so much fame so early in life. He has such an athletic body but his arrogance is becoming a turnoff.

No one ever said that LeBron was an Ivy-League caliber student. His stupidity is reaching Big Ben and Pacman Jones levels.

Could race have played a role in the way he was viewed? Maybe.

 

Was the overwhelming negative respond due to factors outside of race? Absolutely! To mention this only shows that he doesn't get it, but he doesn't need to be a rocket scientist to make his millions.

 

I am starting to like LeBron less and less as the years go by.

All the guys on Around the Horn agreed that race could have been a small factor as well. To me, that isn't then agreeing, that is them being politically correct on a subject that could get ugly.
