Randy Wyatt vs. Perry Thomas

Featured Replies

Coach Thomas is very respected throughout the state but Coach Wyatt won a title and Perry Thomas has some disappointing losses in the playoffs. What gives? Is Wyatt a better high school coach? Was Wyatt just lucky? Is the six classes that made the difference? Or was PT in need of some fresh, new ideas and Coach Wyatt was just what the Tornado ordered?

Coach Wyatt was likely on the verge of getting canned, before there unlikely playoff run last year. Interest had hit rock bottom. PT always has great athletes, yr in and yr out, but, the #s were way down. Some of that was because of Thomas staff and some was Wyatts way. He's a stern disciplinarian, which is what those kids needed, but, until they started winning, it wasn't selling. Now that they have that trophy and restored a little pride and tradition, the kids and the parents have bought in and the numbers are back up again. don't get me wrong, they still aren't dressing 85-90 kids like they did in there heydays of the 60s, 70s and 80s, but, are bringing out 65 to 70 and thats way up from a few short yrs ago when #s were in the upper 30s, to mid 40s...

I think you can only compare the two coaches in the six-class format. Thomas coached one year in the current 3A and lost to Central, the eventual state champion, on a last-second field goal in the semifinals.

I don't see any reason to think that Thomas couldn't have won a state championship in 3A last season.

Who would you want coaching your team, Perry Thomas or Randy Wyatt? I want Perry Thomas and it isn't close.

Thomas is now the head coach at Campbellsville University.

This isn't even an arguement. Who would you want to coach your son? I want Perry Thomas!

Perry Thomas hands down, Wyatt would have gotten crushed by a full force central squad, Central had been beat to death with injuries in play offs last year.

Also remember that Thomas had 2 or 3 defensive starters out against a Central team that had been rolling people until that point. The FG that was kicked was the first Central had kicked all year and it skimmed the crossbar as it went across. A lot of things didn't go their way that night.

Whatabout the 03 squad that Thomas had that featured Cantwell and Casey? I thought that team was loaded and should have won the title but got beat at home by Boyle Co.

That team was good. Boyle County was extremely good as well. No shame in losing that one. The caliber of that team compared to this years or last is not comparable.

So if I follow everyone Coach Wyatt was in the right place at the right time but Coach Perry is an excellent coach and leader of young men?

As an outsider looking in at PT I believe Wyatt is the man for the job. I like that he is a disciplinarian , young men need that. Perry was a good coach also and he could have done the same as Wyatt did last year.

I believe Perry was out coached by Smith in 03. PT probably had way more talent than Boyle. Casey was a 1st team USA Today player while Cantwell ended up in the NFL.

I would agree that that particular team was probably a disappointment. But it shows what a TEAM can do vs. a group of great individual players. Boyle was just the better team that year.
