Do Great Facilities Bring the Kids, or Do the Kids Bring Great Facilities?

Featured Replies

I began thinking about the Johnson Central/Paintsville situation. Not to many years ago Paintsville was the football power in Johnson County. Paintsville was a strong Class 1A program that often beat the larger schools, Johnson Central included.

Then Johnson Central started winning and built a beautiful facility. Now, Paintsville is in a down swing, not nearly as strong as they were ten years ago and Johnson Central is in the discussion as a great program.

Now the argument used in most counties can't be used here - transportation. Johnson Central and Paintsville are about a mile a part, so there is no difference in transportation.

Did Johnson Centrals facility bring the kids from Paintsville, or did Johnson Central get a new facility because they were getting the kids?

I think it's a case of if you win the facilaties will come. In other words kids winning gets the nice things then it starts to snowball.

Yea, but what about Walton-Verona? Not picking on them, but they got a nice facility several years ago and now people are talking about them doing better. Am I wrong?

I guess Highlands screws up all scenerios.

I think facilities help but look at Dixie. They've had the nicest facilities in Northern Kentucky in a county with open enrollment for several years now. They aren't exactly loading up the trophy case.

What do you mean? I hear they have the most state of the art weight and locker rooms.

I assume you mean because our facilities stink?

What does winning have to do with a district, county or state giving money to a public school to build better facilities?

Yea, but they aren't basement dwellers either. Don't they have a State Championship in modern time?

The thing I'm after is, does a nice facility get great athletes in a school? Or does having great athletes in your school get you great facilities. I know not everyone is going to be one or the other, but particularly with Johnson Central, they went from losing to a lot of people to beating almost everyone. I know you have to have good players to do that, but for some reason players left neighboring Paintsville - no chose Johnson Central over Paintsville - to attend Johnson Central.

Those aren't he only ways to pay for a facility. And to answer your question, or at least dance around it, do you really think there are not ways to manipulate the system?

Johnson Centrals facility were paid for, in large part, by Coal Severance Money.

As an alum of JC, I need to check out their new facility. I have not seen it since it was finished.

Winning brings the kids.

You really do need to. I was very impressed with it.:thumb:
