He's also hitting .360. I realize that it isn't that many ABs' date=' but if he stays hot then I don't know if I want him out of the line up. Just an observation and even though he did have 4Ks, he also had a hit and scored a run. He had a bad game, but he still contributed and I just wondered if he had the ability to play short everyday cause he is a big upgrade offensively over Janish IMO. And I know Janish has filled in nicely and that Cabrera is our SS.[/quote']

I have no idea if he has that ability or not. I asked the same question earlier in the thread, but I was asking more for next year. IMO, the lineup will be back to normal (Phillips and Cabrera back in) for this weekend.

There was some talk last night about BP still not being able to hold a bat very well. Sounded like we might not see him until next week.

I agree and that's the way it should be. Just like to keep the guys that are hot in there. I also wouldn't mind Bruce leading off this weekend and having Phillips bat second(if he can play), but I doubt that happens

Just more thinking out loud about ways they could be better going into the Cardinals series

He's had 25 major league at bats. He's a "big upgrade offensively"? C'mon now.

Valaika does have better minor league numbers. .293 AVG, .337 OBP% in 2,096 AB's in 5 years in the minors, compared to Janish's .261 AVG & .351 OBP% in 1,702 AB's during his 5 years in the minors.

To answer your question, yes, Valaika is capable of playing SS.

I'm glad somebody posted this. Now we'll all get to see what a huge choke job the Reds are going to manage to pull off. It's going to be a great month for me. It all starts today. The Cards offense is back just in time to beat up on the fraudulent Reds this weekend. Cards already lead 2-0 in the top of 2 today.

Cat got your tongue PS? Counting on you for Cardinal updates. Please keep us all posted. :D

I just registered for playoff tickets...Go to Reds.com to do so.

Registered. Great scalping opportunity.

In case you didn't see, I said that I knew he hasn't had many ABs, I'm just going more off what I see. I would much rather have Valaika hitting than Janish. I realize how good Janish is defensively and that's why I tend to agree that you shouldn't make a change, I was just more thinking out loud.

I saw what you wrote. For comparison's sake:

Paul Janish had 25 career AB's in May '08. They were his 1st 25 AB's on the ML level. He went 7/25 (.280 AVG) with 5 RBI, 2 BB & 5 K. He had an OBP of .333 & OPS of .613.

FWIW, I like Valaika.

The bigger the gap between first and second place the higher the chance of a fight (or two) this weekend.

Especially since suspensions would be far more detrimental to the Reds right now.

I hope so...The Cards have to remember, if they get the urge to bean one of the Reds, the Reds have a missle ready for deployment in the pen. Wouldn't want to be Pujols if that happens.

I'm just going strictly off what I see and not really off stats. And I do know what I'm talking about and Valaika is a big upgrade offensively right now and that has been my only statement. I'm not even saying that he should be playing everyday, just wondering if there are ways to keep him in there why he is hot. I don't care if Janish started off 25/25 because that isn't what I'm looking at.

I would love to see Chapman send a 105 MPH fastball in between #2 & #9.

Valaika has proven to be a valuable asset to the team & he will remain with the team through the playoffs. He will not be an everyday player, but will probably fill in occasionally at various spots in the infield (including 2B, SS & 3B). A younger Miguel Cairo, if you will.
